That's very odd. My board runs my quad quite happily at 1333 (333 x 9 = 3GHz), totally stable. But of course mine is the older stepping.

this is my first post and im kind of a noob when it comes to hardware but if anyone has the patience to explain a solution to me, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have an 8800gtx with the latest drivers, an X-Fi sound card with latest drivers, an Ageia Phsyx card with latest drivers, 4X1GB CORSAIR DDR2 6400 XMS2 ETREME, an INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6600 2.40, COOLERMASTER 600WATT EXTREME POWER, Vista Home Premium x64, all running on the P5N-E SLI motherboard with the latest bios version

all was running perfectly until i decided to make a cpu upgrade to the new E6850
I have already got a replacement motherboard and a replacement cpu and i still encounter the same anomalies

as soon as my new cpu goes in, my computer turns on fine, i start using an application and after a while (10-30 mins.) my system will just freeze, power down, or restart with no warning at all. I put in my old E6600 cpu and all the problems dissapear, put in the new E6850 and the problems come back. Intel and Asus assure me that the products are fine seeing as how they both sent me replacements already, and i still get the same issues. I read some posts in this forum that led me to believe others have experienced a similar problem to mine but the posts were a bit above my head in terms of understanding so i was wondering if anyone could attempt to explain the solution to a noob like myself...

That heatsink will not fit. I bought one thinking it would, and ended up bricking my board somehow while installing it. It was and extremely tight fit, with the push pin things at an angle basically. After I had it on, the motherboard would no longer post. Had to return the motherboard for warranty. It was deemed un-repairable and I got a new one.


Has anyone moved to the new BIOS 0708 yet? I'm on 0608 right now and all is well.

Yeah i moved to 0708. Nothing much to report. Got another BSOD while installing XP on a new HD. No clue. Going to dump this one once the next generation of SLI mobos coms out. Hopefully they won't be as quirky with memory etc.

Exactly the same problems. I had an E6600 with 0202 and it was just fine over clocked to 2.99 Ghz. (can't remember what the FSB was though). As soon as i got the q6600 and upped it a hair the thing wouldn't boot. I have memory set to 4/4/4/12 2t and upped the VCore and Vmem a bit but haven't experimented much since then.

Yep, sure do. Just look at the thing! It has geek written all over it, and I find that hilarious! On the other hand, I wouldn't have recommended it if I didn't think it was worth a look. I would actually be surprised if it fit over the SB considering how big vid cards are these days. Furthermore, if that heatsync is for the NB only, why would any P5N-E owner need one? Didn't the boards come with a big old Asus heatsync already on the NB ? Mine did, at least :

I can't see this piece of engineering, as inventive as it is, actually cooling my board any more than it already is with the stock heatsync unless it can fit over the naked SB. Apparently, according to another poster, it cannot.

The 6850 is 1333FSB and the 6600 is 1066FSB right ? Assuming they are both running at stock, maybe it's an issue with heat on the northbridge if the case ventilation is poor, or maybe the northbridge needs a little more voltage, or maybe your memory timings have changed and are unstable

thanks for the response.....again......i am an extreme noob.....i dont know what a northbridge is, but the ventilation in my case is VERY good (6 case fans, and 4 internal fans) and i have heard from Intel,l Asus, and the company that built my machine that i should be able to just snap the new cpu in and play even though there is a change in FSB speeds. And yes, they are both running at stock.

About the memory timings and cpu voltage......i though that is something that i have to manually change.....are you saying that putting the new cpu in has changed my memory's timings?.......and if so.....how do i fix it.....can you explain the steps i will have to go through to fix this

And i was also under the impression that my default bios settings are set to auto adjust my cpu voltage as needed....is this not true?......

anyway, thank you very much for the response, and i would appreciate any further information you or anyone else reading this can supply for me.

OK, so your case ventilation is more than OK
One more thing - how are the CPU temps ? I presume they are fine ?

yea....cpu temps seem to be fine..........im stumped....almost ready to just sell my new E6850 on ebay and forget about it..........hope you or someone else can help me from not having to do this

What are you memory settings at the moment - voltage and timings ?

i havent changed anything so they should be running at their default timings which are
5-5-5-12 and i believe a voltage of 1.9V

Is 1.9v enough ? Most high performance RAM needs 2.1v or so these days. I would check what timings and voltage it actually needs, and set those manually as well as setting the actual RAM speed manually. That will at least eliminate the memory. Depending on what settings are in the BIOS it is possible the RAM may even be running faster than before with the CPU change. How familiar are you with the BIOS settings for this board, and in general ?

i am not familiar with bios settings in general but for this board in particular (due to my problem) i have what i would refer to as, somewhere between common and above average knowledege.

I will try to manually set the timings to 2.1V and manually configure the speeds to 800MHz when i get home from work tonight and ill let you know what happens in a few hours....thank you.......but if this doesnt work......do you have any other suggestions for me to try....any suggestions are greatly appreciated.....

I'll see if I can find out the correct voltage for that RAM, but 2.1v sounds right. That's certainly what my Geil has on the sticker on the side of it.
I don't know if anyone else has the same problem. But to me, it sounds like RAM or something heating up, but could be many other things. There are quite a few things to try. For example, if it was me I would have re-set the BIOS to it's set-up defaults after the CPU change, and of course then manually set the memory timings and volts again. Also, what BIOS version do you have ? Do you have CPU-Z, Everest or some other software to show you certain readings etc ?

no....i dont use any programs like that....i just go to my bios screen at start up and look at the info...i have the most recent bios version...and i have tried others....they all have the same issue

ok.....so last night i went home and tried to up the voltage on my memory modules....i had the option to up it to 2.085V and 2.178V......I trieds both........same problem still.............any more suggestions?

Hi, I just wanted you to know I have a similar problem. My computer freezes randomly whenever I´m running a program. Thought it was the graphic card so I bought a new one. Didn´t help though.
Figured it has something to do with my memory.
Ran a memtest - no errors.
Ran orthos - lots of errors.
Ran orthos with just one stick in - no errors.
Ran with both in but not using dual-channel - no errors.

Now I´m stuck. Doh.

evitcani, did you try using the two other ram slots instead ? Some people have had different experiences with the yellow vs black slots

Thanks, well yeah, I have tried both. Also forgot to mention I´ve changed both volt and timings manually.. Tried 1.9, 2.035 (or something like that) and 2.087 V
No OC at all. Defect MB or just a crappy one? I was quite unlucky as I first found all the problem-threads of this MB AFTER I bought it. I don´t understand how 7-8 sites recommended this MB when every purchaser hate it Gets me a bit angry.

EDIT: My ventilation is also quite splendid, Asus Probe has never showed any readings over 40 degrees celsius. That´ll be 104 f.
