Looking for some help on OC settings for my P5N-E. Cant get past 1175 QDR

Parts:
E4300 CPU
Zallman 9500 cooler
Gigabyte 7600GT (passively cooled ard)
GSkill PC 6400 2ea 1GB sticks in the back slots
Enermax Liberty 430w PSU
Seagate 7200.10 320gb SATA drive
2 PATA DVDRW drives

What I am findind is I cant get to 1200 FSB QDR setting. I am fine at around 1175, unlinked. gives me a comfortable 2.64ghz, completely stable.
Memory is is 5-5-5-15, command =T2 (unlinked)
vcore 1.35v
mem 1.92v
NB core 1.393v
offset +100mv

Any time I push the FSB up, the machine will hang on boot, or sometimes I get into Windows and get about 5-10 minutes before hang. My CPU is at around 41-45c depending on load.

Reading through this thread it appears I should be able to start at 1200 and work up from there. So either I have really missed the boat and am doing something stupid or I have some of the poorer parts.

Any help appreciated

Well, Asus might not have set the pricetag, but the Striker Extreme is targetting the Enthusiast's segment, while the P5N-E SLI is targetting the budget/performance segment.

You can't compare a big apple with a small apple like they do in the review. It's like comparing a Dodge Viper with a Ford Escort. They are both cars and they have wheels.

I was surprised that Striker was going over $400 in US, because the VAT in Sweden is 25%, and you can buy a Striker $450 here.

well imo it'd be more like comparing a neon vs a viper since they're made by the same company (the chipset not necessarily the mobo). and the reason they made the comparison is b/c the 650i chip is able to crank out just about the same benchmark scores as its bigger brother the 680i. so imagine if u could get the performance of a viper for the price of a neon, which is pretty much why this thread as nearly 160 pages of posts.

Try [Unlinked] FSB1333/667Mem Vcore [Auto], NB [Auto], Vcore offset Voltage [Auto] with the rest of your settings

I got a e6300 and can easily run at 1600/800 with Kingston DDR 667. (I have even got it to post at 900 on the memory) If I go above 1600 (2.8 gz) it will post but freeze right after Windows load or during boot and get a black screen. is this the "holes" in the OC I am seeing?

I have a Heatsink on the Southbridge and two fans on the NB, but am waiting on my 3-pin adapters to connect the fans.

Also my memory timings are set to Auto and I get 2,2,2 24, 32 2 T. Any changes to this and it will freeze as well.

1m test results in 20.0xx seconds though, so it is right on track. I can play Quake 4 all night long at 2.8.

Agree but I think they have their voltages wrong If they used AUTO for the NB it would have been easier

not the case for me, when i did my oc i did have to manually set the nb voltages to 1.563, i believe i had the cpu vcore set at either 1.45 or 1.475. i've never tried past 400mhz since it required a drop in multiplier to 8x just to hit 400mhz for me, and i dont want my room to turn into a furnace.

Second, tests suggest that there?s little sense in high FSB frequencies on the ASUS P5N-E SLI as well as on the ASUS Striker Extreme. The FSB strap is changed somewhere within the 400-450MHz range and leads to a catastrophic hit of memory performance, which is not always made up for well by the CPU frequency growth.

Totally agree. The best performance level to strain ( heat, voltages, ) is at 1600FSB. I get the same performance level with my P5B Deluxe. It's effortless to attain and stays cool and benchmarks are great.

can't really comment on this one since i have not gone past 400mhz, though i think they should say 401-450 instead of 400-450.

Third, we encountered a FSB hole with our ASUS P5N-E SLI. The mainboard was totally inoperable at FSB frequencies from 400 to 450MHz.

Don't agree totally but, it could be effected by the chip strap for each processor. For mine the E6400 it was the 418 - 423FSB that there were holes. It seem like they tried to make the Striker board look better when in fact the P5N-E SLI is easier board to clock. I even have my ram documented running at 1143MHz and I didn't even try to go higher and a couple of us hit 485- 490FSB with the 8 multiplier. I like the other review it was more of what this board is like

again i thought it should say 401-xxx here


i think this board overclocks a lot better with the lower end core 2 duo cpu's than with the higher end (6600 and up). i don't know if this is by design

What multiplies can you use in the 355FSB area? Can you do 9? With your E6300 you hit some high clocks easily

E6300 has multipel 7. So unless it's an engineering sample, setting multiple to 9 is not gonna happen.

Core2: I've tried the tip and reverted to older drivers. So far, no BSOD nor network problems.

Is anyone else having problems with the USBs on your system?

I am using six ports (4 on the IO and two on the installed back bracket). The system has no problems identifying the mouse, my plantronics headphone and mike setup, and my printer. What it is not seeing after a reboot or even after a hibernation/sleep are my Cougar HOTAS, my TrackIR, and my scanner.

I am running WindozXP with SP2 and the USB drivers are up to date as well as all the drivers for the USB items.

This occurs whether my system is OCed or not. All USB options are enabled in the BIOS.

It sure has become a PITA to have to unplug each device and plug it back in to get it to be recognized. I have used every configuration (moving from one USB port to another) with no luck.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

And I still can't beleive that this is topic is not a sticky and made the OFFICIAL thread.

I was asking him about his E6600. He use to have a E6300 that clocked well. Good to hear you have no network problems.

e6300 up to 3150/800 now. Temp seems a little high at 49 idle up to 51 load though.

Hey guys, long time reader, first time joiner.

Finally went and picked up an e6400 and a p5ne-sli board.

I killed my DFI Lanparty Ultra-D 939 motherboard a couple weeks ago and decided to step it up to the C2D platform.

I bought some OCZ Titanium 800MHz 2GB kit, all of which were picked up from work.

I work at a computer store. 🙂

Anyhoo', I was hesitant on the cpu purchase because we only had e6400's with the following information, FPO/BATCH#: 7639A145, made in the philippines.

I dunno how well it's going to do on the overclock, but I just bit the bullet.

Right now running some memtest tests on the ram running EPP Expert mode with 4-4-4-15 1T timings. 1 Pass, zero errors so far so good.

Going to pick up the bracket set for my Thermalright XP-90C tomorrow, so overclocking will commence then, or maybe I'll wait a week for this stuff to burn in.

Going to pick up a Zalman south bridge passive cooler as well.

Flashed to 0401 bios straight off the bat of course.

UPDATE.

System is super fast at default settings so far. So responsive compared to my opteron 939 setup previously.

Anyhoo, I noticed that my nvidia network adapter does not show up in the network connections portion, but is working and installed, as I am writing to you now from my new C2D setup.

What's the deal? Can you guys see your adapters in the "Network Connections" menu/folder?

THank you for your tip on how to get past the 1200QDR setting. I am now at 3.0Ghz using your FSB 1333 667MEM recoemdnation. improved memory timings to 4-4-4-12. Very stable. Cores at around 30c idle, Prime95 pushed them to 52c for a bit and they came right back down at test end. No errors.

I would presume I am giving up some memory performance in trade for CPU. Shoud I now try to push both FSB and MEM up maintaining a 1:1 ratio?

Overall this has been an interesting experince. First time OC, and enjoying the learnings along the way.

Just bump the memory up if you want FSB 1333/800 Mem. Next stop try 1464/800

What do you guys think? Can this cooler - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835103015 - out perform the stock nb cooler on this board? I do have a Silverstone 120mm fan on my side panel that is most definitely moving some air over the stock nb cooler. Keep in mind this cooler is pretty damn small. Its base is about 1 and three quarters inch by 1 and three quarters inch. From the base to the top of its fins its only about 3 quarters of an inch tall. The fan spins pretty damn fast I believe. I'm just worried this cooler doesn't have enough surface area or material to out perform the stock cooler... what do you think?

E6300 i was able to hit 430 FSB on default multi of 7x

on the E6600 i could not hit 400fsb w/o dropping the multi to 8x, regardless of voltage settings.

This board's layout is great as well. My case temps and part temps have dropped significantly since there is less clutter in my case now coming from a DFI Lanparty Ultra-D.

My 8800GTS dropped from idling around the high 60's to low 70's to high 50's. What a huge difference.

My cpu was made in the philippines compared to the many I've seen from malaysia. Any differences? Also on the cpu and box it says FPO/BATCH#: 7639A145, pack date 01/31/07. Version #: D63629-002.

I don't see any problems. It's sounds like you have a pretty good setup there. If you were to change something to see those network connection you might bring down the computer and then have a real problem. Wait a while I'm sure they'll pop up sometime soon. I never checked where my processors ( 3 core2's ) were made I'll check tomorrow and let you know. OK

EDIT: Maybe you don't have administrator rights to see those connections???

Yeah this and probably more will be my 24/7 speed. So you think the stock nb heatsink with gust from panel fan will move more heat than the dinky cooler master thing?

Nope. I have everything setup just right. I think I'm going to uninstall the network adapter and reinstall it. Sometimes these little things happen.

Okay, couldn't sleep and thought I'd just mess with some overclocking just for fun to see what I could do with stock settings all around.

Wow this board is so simple. Coming from a DFI Ultra-D board I am totally shocked.

All I did was leave EVERYTHING on auto and just bumped up the FSB.

Tried for 3000MHz cpu speed, so 375MHz FSB on my E6400.

Voila, no problemo. Ran just a short 20mins stress test using that GUI version of prime95 that everyone knows so well. 2 of course.

I tried for 3400MHz as well. Same thing, but noticed that the voltage was being bumped up automatically just like previously posted by members here.

Voltage was kinda high, 1.52v in speedfan, and 1.213 showing in cpuz, so I went with the higher number. These are idle numbers.

Loads hit 1.440, so droop is in effect quite a bit. Both cores hit 72C.

Ran no problemo though. Of course this isn't official, just some short tests to keep me entertained until I really try for some good numbers using a good cooler.

So far I'm really pleased. What a great bunch of hardware I got this time.

Oh yeah, kept my ram timings at 4-4-4-15, 1T @ 800MHz DDR2 of course.

I haven't seen huge benefits from overclocking 800MHz ram any higher, so just leaving it be, since it is pretty fast as it is.

I also read an article/review/test online where this tester compared ram at 800MHz and the other at 1000+MHz with similar timings and the gains in real world performance in applications and games within windows weren't that awe inspiring to go through the trouble of testing out stable settings.

Soooooooo, in short, I've decided to leave the ram.

Oh yeah, I tried 3.6GHz and core0 was okay, but core1 failed pretty quickly. I tried again with the stress test and the system rebooted, but that was only when I ran the stress tester.

Hoping to get 3.6 stable once I get my cooler on there and mess with some manual voltage settings for the NB.

I'm once again shocked at how easy this setup overclocks. This is a freakin' WIN WIN combination we have here fellas, I'm sorry for those who are having issues with this motherboard.
