If the air temp is ~RT (20c, 68f) then those sound like good numbers to me.

Question for you guys... Im making a new system with E6600 and P5N-E soon. I'm looking to have the processor clocked around 3ghz all said and done, but i have some worries on what CPU coolers fit this motherboard properly? It sounds like the MB heatsink is larger than usual, and has issues with certain aftermarket CPU coolers. Is this the case with the Zalman 9500/9700 series or Arctic Freezer 7? Anyone have a list of what will fit properly? Thanks.

I have a quick question about core temps compared to cpu temps. I'm using speedfan beta. While running orthos. cpu gets as hot as 47c, but 90 % of the time is around 37c under full load. While at the same time I have seen the cores go as high as 67c. Is this way to high for a core or should i mainly consentrate on just the cpu temps? Nb and sb have been in the mid 30c range. no big spikes there.

we know for certain the arctic freezer 7 pro requires a bit of modding to fit properly. nothing more than cutting off a bit of the plastic and bending a couple of aluminum fins. i cut the plastic off with a wire cutter.

my guess for the zalman is u wont have any clearance issues with the nb heatsink. the tower heatpipe fans like the 9500/9700 and cooler master hyper 6+ (which i originally used but found it too loud and i dont like having to remove the mobo just to get it off to swap cpus) usually have a bit of distance between the seat and cooling block of fins. the hyper 6+ is a pretty large cooler and it fit very nicely. i felt the fan was noticeably louder than the arctic cooling, had blue LED that i didnt like, and it wasnt swappable (100mm fan).

hey, ur current system spec is almost identical to what i had except i had ocz sticks and x2 3800+, otherwise same mobo, same 7900gt sli and sound.

Hi, I'm new here to the forum, but I have been visiting it for a while now. I have ordered a P5N-E SLI and an E6600 and was wondering about the power connections. I noticed the board has a normal 24-pin connector and another ATX12V 4-pin connector. I don't see anything mentioning these connectors in the manual I have been reading online from the ASUS site. Do both of these need to be connected? What is the 4-pin one for ? Thanks for any help in advance.

yes you will need to connect both.

If you look at my sig you can see the coolers I have fitted. Would it help if I uploaded photos of the system?

Edit: Just spotted jkcheng122's post. My Arctic Freezer went on with no mods at all - but then again, I had already removed the Asus heatsink from the NB. Had a "dry run" with both the Arctic Freezer and the Noctura before final fitting. Both went on without a hastle.

EDIT: The NB and SB temps can not be read from speedfan. You need to attach senors ( page 92 ) . What I think you are reading is a motherboard sensor that is located between the two SLI slots. That temp is easily influenced by heat coming from your graphic card. Your temps are about right for your overclock you have in your sig. Nice OC what is your FSB/Mem ratio and multiplier

Page 92 has some that work well. The ones you mentioned I believe will fit

Well, having a go at 3.375... changed the fan on the Tuniq and re-seated it using my akasa thermal paste. Currently sitting in low to mid 50's. Hopefully once the the thermal paste sets it will maintain it around 50 - don't really want to run above that.

Thats a 1500 FSB at 1.39, +100mV on the CPU.

tried it at 1700 FSB and worked better than 1600, but eventually froze up, going to try to bump it up to 1800 just to see what hapens... just can't figure out why i can't get anything above 1400 FSB with out it freezing up in ortho

the 4pin connector is what commonly known as the p4 connector, i'm not sure if it needs to be plugged in for core 2 duo processors, i did plug that in from my psu w/o giving it a second thought. i'm not sure if it's required.

anyone with more info on this please chime in.

not sure how it is for the e4300, but my e6600 is at 1600fsb and has never gotten close to 50C, tuniq tower is one of if not the best cpu coolers reviewed by anandtech, i think your temps are way too high for your settings.

So does that mean that speefan is giving me the thereticaly right core temps? Where does that leave the CPU temps that it is giving me?

As for my NB and SB temps I'm also using an external case sensor that I have attached to each of those along with a cpu case sensor.

On another note; My system has become unstable after much testing since my upgrade to 0401 bios. I had all my voltage controls set to auto, but I have gone back to manualy setting them and it seems to have stabilized (12 hours of orthos).

Core temps are accurate in Speedfan or Core Temp and should be the ones to monitor. CPU temp is probably measured from the back side of the board with a analog senor and is not as accurate as the the digital core temp. I get 96F for the NB and 85F for the SB at default FSB. I have two small chipset fans on the NB and Zalman heatsink on the SB. Auto setting work till about 475FSB for me.

Just up your vcore till your stable try 1.35 - 1.4 or Auto. NB try auto

What was your best stable OC when you had the E6300. Maybe you can post some setting for the people having trouble getting to and over 1600FSB. I'm starting to think this board was made for the E6400 chip.

You know what, you are right.... so now I have my pc's guts lying out while I play around with how much thermal paste to apply, how tightly to screw done the cpu, etc, etc.

Just with I could find some references for what temps people are getting for this cpu around the speeds I am using.

Am running at 3.15GHz which I know is stable. When I got home from running orthos all day, my temps were sitting around mid 40's.

Currently, after re-seating again, I am still around mid 40's, and up to 50 sometimes. I know the thermal paste needs to cure, but surely it should be lower.

Perhaps the Akasa silver thermal compound just isn't that good? I don't know... but am really regretting spending all this cash on cooling. Doesn't seem to be doing much....

Will just have to continue playing at the weekend.

well, i put the Vcore voltage on auto, and upped the FSB to 1800, currently running at 3150MHz "450x7" Pcprobe says my Vcore is ranging in the 1.54-1.57v , also i set +100mv on the cpu in the bios. NB is set to 1.53, mem is set to 2.25. So far Orthos is running for about 10mins with no problem which is longer than it has ran before with other settings over 1400FSB. So wich me luck!!! lol Cpu temp is good as well my high so far is 37*C

well, with those settings it didn't freeze up after about 20mins or so but it rebooted. so i went back in and set the NB to auto, Vcore to auto, left my ram at 2.25, said F@#$ it and upped my ram from 4-4-4-12 @800MHz to 5-5-5-15 @1000MHz, Booted fine, i also noticed that my Vcore isn't up around 1.54v anymore now it stays around 1.44-1.47v...umm so i was thinking that maybe setting the NB to auto is helping this out?? don't know but i would be very happy if these settings pan out..... also i did leave the FSB at 1800.

Good job! Its nice when all you have to do set the ram rest auto. I also noticed that when you set the Vcore and the NB to auto that both require less voltage

For all you E6300 owners having problems skip the 1600FSB altogether and jump right to the 1700FSB ( it can be done with patient ). E6600 same thing with a 7, 8 multiplier. Set the Vcore to Auto NB to Auto and experiment with the ram timings and Voltage. You can try Auto for that too. Ryan ( adder1971 ) had been saying this since the second half of this thread. I think if your ram is in the right order and right slots that it should work. Cooling is a main factor too.
