Also, about the CMOS on a bad POST, I've found that hitting the reset switch 2x quickly also resets it to fail-safe default settings. Like most, having to manually reset the CMOS (remove the battery or mess with jumpers) is probably the biggest deterrent to repeated attempts at OCs, so this board definitely makes the situation a bit easier. Sequence is: exit out of BIOS > no POST > reset button > reset button again quickly > wait for POST.

How have those Crucial Ballistix 2x1GB DDR2-1000 been doing. Can you hit 1000MHz 7x500

I had posted a link to the 0401 bios in the Asus forum and they took out my post. Few people complaining about that 0307 so stay away from that. It seems that they took out the 0307 too its not showing in the download area

this board has been out too long to only have the original bios. apparently they didnt like the 0401. i do though

Hey guys, is there a memtest version for windows or are you guys running it old school with a boot floppy? I haven't used memtest floppy style or otherwise for a while cause DFI puts it straight into the bios. Planning on running some mem OC'ing tonight since i'm cooling limited on the cpu till the watercooling is setup. Thanks

A memtest program that runs inside of Windows would essentially be useless. You need to be able to run a memtest with nothing using the RAM, ie. Windows itself. You can make a bootable USB thumbdrive with memtest86 and run it from that, if you don't have a "old school" floppy.

Hmm, I've never done that before, can I just right click it and say format and make it bootable?

Oh wait, nm pretty sure the UBCD(ultimate boot CD) has memtest in it. Its about a year old, do I need a new version of memtest for this board?

Do you all think with further bios updates they might give us a bit more fine tuning on the NB and Memory voltage? I don't like how big the jumps are. Not sure what to expect from Asus as I haven't used a board from them in over 5 years.

i agree, they are very steep. would be nice to have much finer steps. my mem is rated for 2.2 and totally craps out above the 2.259 setting.

Interesting, as my mem is rated for 2.2v and doesn't seem happy any higher than the 2.178v setting. BIOS issue perhaps?

Anyway, been running Memtest86+ v1.70 tonight and pushing my ram. I'm not running high FSB's, but rather utilizing the "unlinked" feature. I can't seem to get my E4300 to post when I drop it down to the 6x or 7x cpu multiplier, probably another bios issue.

So at 425x7 (3.4ghz cpu), I pushed the ram up to 1039 (says 1046 in bios) with 5-4-3-4 2T being the best timings I could manage. Memtest86+ reports 5155mb/s bandwidth--and it's apparently stable!

I'm having to stay with lower fsb's because my system only works with the x8 and x9 multipliers. It just about never posts with the x6 and x7 multipliers. And yes, probably another bios issue

use sisift sandra and see what that says for your mem bandwidth. 5155mbs seems low. i'll have to try your timigs as well and see how far i can push mine.

Sisoft is notoriously innacurate in it's bandwidth reportings unless you turn off caching.

mine are week 42. likely not micron d9 anymore from what i have read. week 31 seemed to be the cutoff but it's anybody's guess. i took the heatspreader off and it certainly didn't say micron d9 anything on it.

First post... Though I would say that many of the members here seem very intelligent and helpful!

The rest of my E6600 monster should be here tomorrow so that I can get this thing up and running.

I have three main questions:



First, in order to flash to 0401 BIOS, do I need the utility or can I just use the Thumb Drive and flash within the BIOS themseleves?



Second, I am going to run SATA RAID 1 with 160gb drives. I wanted to know if the BIOS supports reading from the Thumb Drive as a RAID Driver installer in the XP setup. I have heard that XP only looks for a floppy which means that I am going to have to rip one out of another machine unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Any ways around this?



Third, if I place a 80mm case fan on the NB, a small heatsink on the SB, and leave the intel fan on the CPU, will I be able to overclock without heat issues? I have the Antec MidTower ATX for a cooling reference. What is *too* hot for these CPU's?
