well i did crash while just multitasking and not transferring files. i have a mild oc going, much less than i had that was very stable that is in my sig.

i am at 3.0ghz 375fsb memory is 1:1 at 2.1x volts at default timings that ocz specifies 4-4-4-15-2t cpu voltage is 1.35, nb at 1.39 - same settings that ran my faster OC like butter.

so if i run orthos for hours and hours stressing my cpu with no errors, that should mean my chip is good. then if i run memtest twice and pass tons of its tests, my memory should be ok. that leaves the mobo? or am i wrong

i am trying to figure out a way to make sure whether this problem is my mobo, the cpu or the memory.

i am going to run memtest all night tonight while i sleep to do every single test. i did 5 passes yesterday which should be enough but i want to be sure. i need to find a test to make sure my cpu is ok, sure it handles orthos fine but is it doing it fast enough? if it isnt the mem or cpu it has to be the mobo. it cannot be every hard drive i have or all my cables. the odds of that are astronomical.

also, it has been noted by anandtech this chipset is not so good with hard drive operations, so this does not look like coincidence. i routinely back up a lot of data (photography) and so i may have to switch to a p5b. i really like this chipset, it makes overclocking super easy and fun. i was even hoping to sell this ram down the road and get some 1000mhz ram and really have fun.

oh also, i stated my wrong voltage for my ram when i had it at 1T. i was using the 2.2 voltage setting in the bios. ocz warranties this ram to use 2.2volts +/- 5%.

question, does the v-droop of this board not only affect the cpu but also the NB & ram?

If you want stability go with the 975 chipset Intel badaxe. I have a P5B Deluxe and that JMicron controller will drive you nuts if you don't know how to configure it.

As far as vdroop all voltages droop and all boards have it Asus boards are famous for it

I still say running 1T had a lot to do with your problems.

Zipzoomfly is only going to give you an exchange.

Keep the voltage for the ram that had you been running at all along 2.2v
I wouldn't change that
I haven' tried 375 so there cold be mem holes there so try a FSB that has been solid for you

ahh it is only an exchange.

so does vdroop affect just the cpu vcore or all the voltages?

well i am running 2t now. and like i said, i ran this board at stock values for everything for a day and got a ton of errors. it isnt the oc. something is wrong.

Let me know when you want to start amd I'll give you some numbers

OK, I'm ready to OC. I have my Ram @ 2.08 4-4-4-12-2T. Mobo is bios 0202, both cores are running around 37&39C my mobo shows 37C. I can up my NB & CPU voltage but I'm unsure how to set my FSB .. linked, nonlinked, mhz etc..

& how do I test my stability?

its a retarded size heatsink and thats the best I could do about getting it on there.

Looks good, how well does it stay in place? It looks like you have air blowing on it rather then pulling from it. I wonder which would work better?

its on their pretty good. I used some long screws I had from another old heatsink/fan and just wedged the screws in between the fins.

I was also wondering if I should have air blowing on it or pulling from it. Not sure which will work better.

Hey, nice job. sure that will work.
Where do you post your pictures ?

just on my internet service providers web storage that they give us.

do you think I should have it blowing air on it or pulling air from it?

Is that a stock Intel HSF I see Your going to have to keep the rpms up if your going to do any overclocking

Thanks donxvi for covering for him

this thread is going too fast for me to keep up with =)

currently working on building my mom's new pc using the parts i upgraded from. i'm also no longer the SLI man =( since i put one of my 7900GT's in her computer. i know it's kinda overkill since she doesnt do any 3d work/play, but it's the only pci-e video card i had laying around.

she'll be goin from a northwood p4 2.4ghz 1gb ram to this:
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 3800+ 2.0GHz @ 2.2GHz (will probably go for 2.4GHz when everything's finalized)
Motherboard: ASUS A8N-SLI
Memory: OCZ DDR400 Platinum XTC
Hard Drive: Western Digital WD740GD Raptor with 8MB Cache (need to add a storage drive)
Video: XFX nVidia GeForce 7900GT
Audio: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy
Power Supply: Antec NeoPower 480W Modular
Case: Antec Sonata

john, u said the nb chipset fan should be blowing on the heatsink? i have it sucking warm air from heatsink and blowing it away from the heatsink so the case fans can suck that warm air out of the case.

yep that is the stock hsf. i'm very careful of my temps at full load using it. its also applied with artic silver 5 which helps. at 3ghz I'm seeing temps around 63C at full load.

We discussed this earlier in the thread in regards to my wife divorcing me if I spend anymore money on computer parts while we are home shopping. Thats why I was checking my bin of crap parts to find a fan for the NB.

Oh yes, I remember now. Boy she a tough cookie. Tell her I said it is the most important part when building these new computers and that you weren't aware of it. If that doesn't work I guess will just have to pass the hat around and start a HSF Fund for you. I have an extra Freezer Pro stop by and I'll loan it to you

The air blowing on it cools it better It pretty much bounces off that big heatsink and is suck up by the Freezer and dumped out the back door

Sorry, ended up running to fry's and replaced my NB with Thermaltake Spirit II

I used these settings:
As far as numbers Set to: Unlink
FSB 1420
Mem 710

Currently downloading 3Dmark06

However it froze when I came into windows so I uped my NB to 1.39 and my Vcore to 1.35 and it's fine. My cores are @ 40&41C and mobo @ 36.

So now I'm sitting at 3.2GHz is my memory running slower @ 710? because I reduced it from 800?

Good job. Thats all you have to do. Although I would have just up the NB first and tried that. Try to change one setting at a time and record it. This way you are not applying unnecessary voltage or setting. Good core temps. That E6600 will run a little hotter than the E6400 and the E6300. MB temps seem a little warm. Do you have enough case cooling. You memory is running 1:1 ratio right now and thats a good start. Well try something higher later. Run your tests and enjoy it. You have a good chip there and you really don't have to push it to get a decent FSB or cpu speed. I was thinking of getting one but, I already have 3 two E6400 and a E6300. I should have just bought one X6800. Nice chipset fan! Don't forget lights make heat. Let me know how easy it was to change and your results

hahahah she'll never buy that being that I've built so many systems before. I can't really push my luck with her because I've told her no more shopping for stuff too.

If you ever feel charitable and want to give that freezer pro to a good home let me know
