Would you like to share your settings (voltages, timings, frequencies), with the rest of the class...? ;)

When I booted the first time it said something like "UNKNOWN CPU....PLEASE UPDATE TO THE NEWEST BIOS TO UNLEASH THE FULL POWER OF THE CPU". I updated the Bios to 803 and the message went away. I wanted to run stock so I changed very few settings. Here's what I did:

<some snipping done>

I am trying to set up a system on similar lines. Key specs:

CPU: Intel C2D E8200 2.66GHz
Mobo: ASUS P5N-E SLI BIOS (dont have version on hand but certainly not the latest)
RAM: Transcend 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800
Video: XFX 8600GT 512MB
HDD #1: Seagate 500GB SATA2
Plus the rest.

When I switch on the system, nothing comes up on the screen, no beeps either. Now, the E8200 is not in the supported CPU list for this board. MB has power (fans work) atleast. Looks like there is a total failure upfront - I am not even getting the initial message that sblake got!! The local ASUS help simply said the board does not support the CPU - and I was about to look at alternative MB when I saw that sblake had succeeded with E8400.

What could be the problem? ASUS certainly is not supporting this CPU/MB combo. Should I be getting some bootup message atleast? Havent really connected anything else except stuff listed above.

Thanks

Will a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme CPU Heatsink fit on this motherboard with a 120mm fan attatched? The heatsink seems like it might get in the way..

Anyone have any problems?

No problems with fitting a Ultra 120 Extreme (inc 120mm fan) to this mobo. Any interference with Northbridge heatsink depends entirely on how tall a northbridge cooling fan you use ?

Found 10mm high fans to be ok, so currently have a 50x50x10mm fan fitted to my northbridge heatsink !

Hi, i've only just joined today so im sorry if these questions have been asked before.

I'm currently using bios version 0202 of this motherboard and im wanting to upgrade my memory from a 6400 geil, to 8500 ballistix tracers.

What version of the bios do i need and does 8500 work with this board?

Edit: Oh and does anyone have any experience with the 0901's?

Thanks guys.

Hey welcome to the forum and to this discussion!

Just update to 0901, I've updated my bios to this version and I'm good thus far.

The E8500 will work with this board with bios starting from 0803 according to Asus, but I personally had problems with the E8400 running stable at stock settings with that bios release, so use 0901.

Thank you very much for the reply. And appreciate the welcome :)

I wasnt very clear in my first post.

I didn't mean the E8500, i meant memory at clock 8500 :p

Oh you mean PC2 8500 ram? Sure it will. I don't see why not.

Which ram?

Gotta be a little more specific. Also check Asus' ram compatibility list as well.

Just have some low voltage ram on standby because some boards don't post with performance ram requiring high voltages to work.

Oh, if you're using just two sticks of ram, use the black slots, not the yellow.

I've just ordered

2x Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz

So i'll be using all 4 memory slots.

You should be fine with those settings.

I would suggest just using your ram at 5-5-5-15, 2T.

CMD rate has to be at 2T for 4 sticks of ram, not too sure about 2x2GB sticks, but I have 4 sticks of 1GB ram and you must run it at that timing.

The reason I suggest the relaxed timings is because you won't see any huge gains with those timings of 4-4-4-12 and you risk instability.

Of course give it a try and see if it is indeed stable, then why not.

I can run my ram at 4-4-4-15, 2T up to and slightly past 500MHz (1000MHz ddr), but I just get paranoid not knowing whether or not my stupid video player crashed or froze my system because of my overclock, ram timings or just because of a codec clash.

So far so good.

5-5-5-15 OR in fact I see some RAM at 5-5-5-18

I agree, you are not likely to see much benefit from tighter timings for most things.

Currently running 2GB of Crucial Ballistix 800Mhz

I read about Windows XP and the 32bit addressing problem above 3GB. On Vista 32bit I hear that it can work around this as long as the BIOS has the option of memory remapping. I have XP SP2 though.

Is there a way to remap memory in the BIOS on this board
to address 4GB and get XP to recognise it or is it only a Vista ability?

Also just out of curiousity, does this board support 1333Mhz memory? I heard a BIOS update would give this option.

EDIT: Nevermind. Looks like an XP 32bit limitation. Vista 32bit works around the problem using other methods that MS obviously can't be bothered to hardcode into XP (and why should they when they want to sell you more bloatware?).

There is no fix for the 32-bit Windows. These will explain the issues:

http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsu...M_w-Windows_08Ap07.pdf

http://www.dansdata.com/askdan00015.htm

I do not think there is 1333MHz DDR2 RAM - this board ONLY supports DDR2 RAM.

If you see the MBs supporting the 1333MHz, it is the FSB frequency, and this board supports the 1333MHz processors (like E6850 etc.) since BIOS 0501, if I'm not mistaken. But apparently the most stable for these is BIOS 0608.

Hi everyone.

I've had my p5n-e for a while now, I've had it happily running my E4300 @ 3.2 GHz.

I am on bios 0901
Just got my hands on a new E8400, and although I'm thinking of getting a new board for it, I just wanted to see how my P5N-e would take on the task of it.

However, I tried running my P5N-E at higher FSBs while running my E4300 at 8x and I cannot for the life of me get my board to POST higher than 400 MHz FSB. Tried Jumps like 450 and 500 with no luck.

My NB is at the max voltage pretty much already. Would turning it down to 1.56 actually help? (might counter-act over heating, which may be the cause of my wall)

or should i just accept that my board can't go higher than 400 FSB... ?

Thanks all.

This motherboard will not work with 8500. I've been trying for ages and i just can not get 1066 on a 1:1.

That's probably something else.
I've had my ram up that high and things were fine. I have OCZ Titanium EPP PC2 6400 ram. That's 800MHz ram that'll do 1066 speeds with 5-5-5-15, 2T timings.
Also the windows 32bit ISSUE is not an issue with showing 4GB of ram, it's a 32bit addressing limitation. You have to move to a 64bit OS to use 4GB of ram or higher.

Also Vista 32bit doesn't FIX the "issue" with showing 4GB of ram. Microsoft just made it so that the OS displays 4GB of ram in the system properties, but it's not all there.

I don't like that move they made, because it's just outright lying to all the mainstream computer users.

Anyways, do you have your ram at 2T for the 4 sticks?

Hey sorry its been long since my reply.

Well i found the problem, my cpu wont allow anything over 800mhz. Not a problem.

Dropped it down to:

E6400 @ 3.2ghz (auto volts)
4gb @ 4-4-4-12-2T @ 800mhz (2.2v)

Problem is the system is now crashing every hour.

What volts should i be on the vcore for my 3.2 overclock?

Also should i enable the SLI memory thing in the bios? If so which option?

Thanks

Hi guys..
i will buy a pair of 4GB kits for my P5N-E, but i havent a lot of money.
I am thinking one of this 3:
- GeIL 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Desktop Memory - Retail (Voltage 2.0V - 2.2V)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820144216

- G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail (Voltage 1.8V - 1.9V)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231122

- A-DATA 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail (Voltage 1.8V)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820211188

What do you think? what have better performance in our Board??

Thankssss.

I've just recently gotten an Asus P5n-E sli motherboard, because I used to have a Gigabyte GA-P965-DQ6 (rev 2) motherboard with 2 Nvidia 8600 GTS's Superclocked, but then I immediately realized the Gigabyte didn't support SLI, so I finally upgraded 2 weeks ago. My RAM is 4 Gigs of Corsair XMS2 SLI supported DDR2 800, and my processor is a C2duo e6600 with a scythe Ninja cooler (will cool it awesomely during an overclock, right??), and my question is what should I do to overclock? I tried using some built-in Asus AI overclocking crap that didn't work, my system would hang during post and so I had to clear the Cmos, unlike what Asus says (which is that the board will automatically reset the Cmos if at the Post screen it hangs, which doesn't always work for me). Anyways, I'm a newb to overclocking, but I was wondering if you guys could help me get from 2.4 Ghz to around 3-3.2 Ghz?? thx.

BTW, this is my first post on this board. I hope I put this in the right section. If not, sry.

First of all, some memory will not work with this board at full 800MHz, but I guess you don't have this problem. Sometimes the NB voltage increase is necessary, even to 1.56V, but a fan should be added.

Use BIOS 0401 for E6600 - very important!

And check my voltages - set them manually, e.g. CPU 1.3V, memory 2.083V.

Manual overclocking, unlinked, 1333MHz CPU, 800MHz RAM.

RAM timings 4-4-4-12-2T - manual settings.

Good luck!
