i didnt do much beyond installing and opening it. temp1 i'll assume is is cpu tem, it is at 36C, granted i have ways to go on my arctic cooler b4 max performance can be reached.
core 0 is at 37C and core 1 is 39C

have proper cooling on the NB and SB chipsets, and set ur mobo settings to what Core2 has in his sig.

the way it works is ur bus speed x cpu multiplier = cpu speed, ie default is 266.7 x 7 (for e6300) = 1867 = 1.86ghz

so to get to 2.8ghz u need 400 bus speed, which u can get by setting ur memory to 400 and set ur fsb to 1600 to maintain a 1:1 ratio. to get to this level takes some tweaking and trail n error'ing b/c as u move up in speed, the system becomes more unstable and u need to up the appropriate voltages to maintain stability. upping voltages however, increases the heat generated from the parts, which is where proper cooling becomes necessary.

Just compare temps to ASUS Probe
Click on configure and select the temperature tab if you click on a temp selection and press F2 you can rename it to anything you want CPU, MB core 1 core 2 HD 1
next go to the fan tab and do the same thing fan1 click press f2 and rename it front fan and so on.
go to the speed tab and check the fans you want to control and set the min and max value and check the Auto variated
click ok
check automatic fan speed on the main page
and your pretty much done
You have to disable Q fan and Q chassis for This to work properly in the bios under hardware
more tomorrow

Went over to the Asus forum and it looks good only a hand full of complaint's mostly ram problems which should work out with some tweaking

Got everything today and finished putting everything together a bit ago. Must say it went smoother than I expected considering its been @3 years since I put my last rig together. Haven't really had a chance to try any OC'ing as I had to reinstall Windows and all my apps. I'll try and do some testing this weekend though.

One word of warning, the NB isn't covered by one of those chipset covers, its the actual exposed core under there like the old AMD Athlons. If you're not careful, you could possibly chip the NB core and then you're screwed. If you do decide to play with the NB heatsink, its probably a good idea to have an after market replacement ready. There's that nasty thermal pad residue all over the core and heatsink, which has a protective foam layer around the core which makes it very difficult to clean the heatsink of the paste.

a few questions for the pros: I have found where to adjust the settings for vcore in the bios but I can't seem to locate the adjustment for the fsb. Also I have both of my ram chips in the orange slots, should I move them to the black ones? It reconizes both of them but I don't know where to look to find out if they are running in dual channel mode or not.

probably how my first board got messed up.

yellow, not orange, if u got orange slots u got a diff board i think. yes, move them to black. if they're the same exact model rams and they're in same color slots, they're in dual channel mode afaik.

fsb adjustment is under "Jumper Free settings" u have to set it to manual, it's defaulted on AI Auto or something.

NOTE OF ADVICE: if u're not familiar with overclocking, be very patient and go up little by little, do not go straight to 1600fsb, it starts at 1066, move up to 1100, after that it'd be best u go 10mhz at a time. i cut my teeth on a A8N-SLI board oc'ing an X2 3800+ cpu, took a lot of time but now i have a pretty good idea what i'm doing in terms of mem ratio, vcore, mem volt/timings and all that.

also be prepared to reset ur cmos, often. and when u do, make sure u have one of those anti-static wrist straps when u dig around ur computer's insides. don't want to learn this lesso the hard way.

they're better in the black slots actually. ppl have reported, myself included, that yellow slots dont seem to allow 1T timings on the memory.

If you are having ram issues

Try putting your ram in the black slots only.
Set timings manually 5-5-5-12 2T or 4-4-4-12 2T the rest auto
Set the ram voltage to manufactors spec voltage 1.92 - 2.08 should boot
NB voltage 1.2 should work to boot 1.39 if overclocking

Overclocking with this board recipe

vdimm 2.08v
Vcore 1.325 to 1.35
NB 1.39v
5-5-5-12 2T
FSB 1600
Mem 800
unlinked or sync mode

LDT multi leave at default

Make sure you have plenty of case cooling and put a fan on the NB a must

install Speefan v4.31 and upgrade it to Speedfan v4.32 beta 8 by swapping out the original speedfan.exe with the Beta speedfan.exe
It is a great program to monitor temps ,voltages, and fan control

To Configure the Program
Just compare temps to ASUS Probe
Click on configure and select the temperature tab if you click on a temp selection and press F2 you can rename it to anything you want CPU, MB core 1 core 2 HD 1
next go to the fan tab and do the same thing fan1 click press f2 and rename it front fan and so on.
go to the speed tab and check the fans you want to control and set the min and max value and check the Auto variated
Select the Advance Tab click the drop down arrow and select the lT8712F at $290 on ISA
This is a little tricky and may vary with different fans and cases. Most import is if you make changes here that work, make sure you check, remember this check box on the bottom for each selection

OK these are my settings

Temperture sensor diode 1 Themister
Temperture sensor diode 2 Themister
Temperture sensor diode 3 Themister
FAN1 divisor 8
FAN2 divisor 2
FAN3 divisor 2
PWM 1- 5 Software controlled
PWMOUT 3M
Temperture offset 1 -3 0
Fan1 mult 1
Fan1 div 1
Fan2 mult 1
Fan2 div 2
Fan3 mult 1
Fan4 div 2
Revere PWM 01 - 05 all off

click ok
check automatic fan speed on the main page
and your pretty much done
You have to disable Q fan and Q chassis fan for this to work properly in the bios under hardware monitor

I slowly worked my way up to 1200 fsb but the bios still lists the cpu speed as 1.86 and not anything higher? Also if you multiply 1066 by 7 you get 7462 which is not 1.86, what am I missing? The memory is operating at half this fsb, correct or is that only in dual channel mode?

It will always report it as Core 2 Duo E6300 @ 1.86 GHz; on the boot screen (if you disable that big pretty picture) it will also list the actual speed. Of course things like CPUZ, etc will also show the true speed.
To calculate clock frequency, you have to divide the number you type into the BIOS by 4, then multiply by the multiplier of your CPU.

ohh I see, is there a physical reason though that we divide it by 4? And it was showing that 1.86 at 1200 FSB in the bios screen itself. CPUZ must run in windows correct?

One of the main goals in designing dual-channel memory interfaces is to match the CPU bus to the memory bus, thereby creating a synchronous link between the two

Memory to CPU Bus speed is proportional
Your situation: E6300 1.86 with a default multiplier of 7
A CPU Bus speed of 300 and mem set @ 600 = 300 / (600 / 2 Dual Channel = 300) or a 1:1 divider
To get the FSB you multiply the bus speed which = 300 x 4 = 1200 FSB
To get the CPU core speed= Multiplier =7 x CPU bus = 300 = 2100MHz

A CPU Bus speed of 500 and mem set @ 800 = 500 / (800 / 2 Dual channel = 400) or a 5:4 divider
To get the FSB you multiply the bus speed which = 500 x 4 = 2000 FSB
To get the CPU core speed Multiplier =7 x CPU bus = 500 = 3500MHz

If you set in the bios Sync Mode instead of unlinked the bios will figure that out for you
Don't forget higher clocking means usually changes to you voltages and mem timings and added cooling

Also download CPU-Z
it will help you understand the relationship better
Does that help

hehe u're about to join our ranks and soon become an overclock addict. every motherboard u look at from now on the first thing coming to your mind will be how it overclocks =)

you should check ur stability, try running some benchmarking programs (i usually run 3dmark06, if system is unstable it won't finish the 10min run) such as prime95. also list if you dont mind, list your system specs in your sig in case if you run into some issues it'd be easier for others to help you if they know what parts you have.

i like pie also, but i always wondered if cheesecakes are considered pie or cake.

I like to call it Welcome to the Dark Side
Don't toast your comuters running Prime.
Running Futuremark programs and small bench mark programs should give you a good idea of how stable you are.
You just answered your own question cheese - cake
