Ok, so I am so bored, I priced up a computer for under 1000 just for fun (not counting monitor) and this is what I got:

All prices INCLUDE shipping and are from newegg. Picked the SK-6 cause it's good and the fan cause its quiet. The AX-7 will not fit in the mobo which was picked for it's shutdown feature if the processor got too hot (a lot cheaper than the Asus board which boasts the same feature).

Total is $957 which MAY be less as sometimes newegg gives a break on shipping on bigger orders. The 1600+ can be overclocked well according to people on these forums. This would not be a bad machine for the money, especially considering that a Radeon 8500 comes close to competing with a TI4200 with the newer drivers.

Anyways... Now I have to figure something else to spend my time on

i dont like that western digital HD. get a maxtor or a seagate. other then thats its a good deal. id spend teh extar $$ and up to a XP1800+

I would have gotten an NV7-133R, then forgotten about the sound card. I'd then use the money saved to purchase a faster CPU.

Hehe, just to make sure this is clear, I'm not buying this, I just priced it up for fun as I am bored

If I were buying it I would go Western Digital myself, just a personal preferance. Everyone has reasons for picking a certain brand or staying away from another.

I myself have only had one HD ever fail on me and it was a Seagate. That tarnished their reputation with me, but I'm sure their products now are good.

This is a good idea, but I am unsure if that board fully support bus speeds higher than 133 (with the proper dividors and what not) as a 1600+ is a great overclocker...

The value part of that would be great. Shave off 60 or so bucks and then use that money for a 2000+ or 2100+. Very nice idea indeed. Then there is the whole aspect of being able to keep the TBSC soundcard when upgraded, which you can't do with the Nforce sound.

wth not??? its the best performing IDE drive possible and a whopping 80gigs is awesome for budget rig...

WD has a great 3 year warranty on all their drives. They'll just send you replacement if you have problems.

I know you were wanting to overclock, but the way I look at it is this - overclocking is hardly, if ever, guaranteed, and I'd rather go with rated speed out of the box than to bank on an O/C that may or may not pan out.

Hmm, I think Xerox Man's is more ultimate than mine. However, I would still go with the Soltek myself, as the new athlons may use 166MHz fsb and the 1600+ does overclock well.

Evan Lieb, the Soltek was picked for its price and its shutdown ability when the processor gets too hot.
