The U.S is doomed.

That's cause Jesus and the Dinsoaurs and Adam and Eve all lived in the garden of Eden together!

When you are charged with conforming reality to the writings of Bronze Age peasants and then forced under penalty or ever lasting BBQ to not only believe it but convince others to that notion you force others to welcome the extinction of the Stork!

I bet that statistic was even worse decades ago. General population just needs to be obedient... and love the koolaid.

Look a the positive. 74% of them knew the Earth orbits the Sun. Another positive, more than 50% believe in evolution. That's progress. People always focus on the negative, which makes the daily news.

Reporters don't understand fractions, either. :hmm:

Corrected headline: "Slightly more than 1 in 4 Americans unaware that Earth circles Sun"

I've heard members of Congress indicate the age of Earth to be <10,000 years. And, some disturbing percentage of the population agree. I wonder if any of the responders follow the notion that Earth is the center of the Universe and logically, therefore, conclude that the Sun orbits Earth, ergo, a trick question.

Members of congress also believe islands can capsize if the population becomes too dense on one edge.

The entire American mainstream, entertainment, media culture glorifies stupidity and ignorance. It simply isn't "cool" in the mainstream to think critically or be scientific. And that's just the media, not even including religion(it same tendency as media to make people think irrationally). Unfortunately those two reach nearly every nook and cranny of American society, so it's really no surprise. The good news is that things are trending in the right direction, just slowly.
