awwwww man... not my Weber..... As a Canadian this pains me immensely now....Good thing I got my new one BEFORE all this nonsense!

Just don't buy a new one.. if it rusts.. just weld some metal sheet on it. What is done is done!

I haven't bbq'ed since 2021.. trying to keep my weight down. Still have like 8 bags of charcoal left though that I picked up on sale.

Just to make things better, Shipping companies are announcing between $1,000-$2,000+ per 40 ft container surcharges that go into effect May 15.

If the Tariffs eventually settle to a 10% tax on every country. That mainly becomes a 10% national sales tax.

Of course it's NOT bringing new revenue into the country, since it's US citizens paying it.

Plus it's a regressive tax that hits the poor the hardest, and the revenue will probably be used to give tax breaks to the wealthy.

Other countries with National sales taxes, issue rebates to the lower income folks to offset the regressive nature of sales taxes, but you can bet the GQP won't.

So this becomes a means to transfer more wealth from the poor to the rich.

I'm not completely convinced the tariff thing is over.

China gave nothing away and they've humiliated Trump into calling it off, although MAGA is spinning it as art of the deal.

Ofcourse Trump will want a deal where they start buying beef/ soyabeans/ gas from the US again.. but why would the Chinese do that?

They've already started buying beef from Australia, soyabeans from Brazil and gas from Canada.

Sure.. someone's gonna take the fall for this.. most likely Lutnick/ Bessent but honestly China is not alone. Trump has made America threaten all our (former) allies and friends with invasion.. Canada/ EU/ Mexico.

Would you want to be friends with the US after that??

Seems we've pushed a lot of them into China's orbit vs staying in ours unless you're stupid like Starmer.

And the Stock Market was always.. believe in American growth.. where the hell is that growth going to come from?

Sure the stock market long term may remain irrational.. but sooner or later.. these chickens will come home to roost and it will not be a pretty realization that China is now the beacon of economic growth (just because they didn't threaten anyone with invasion).

That'll likely annoy Trump into another embargo.

Is it just me thinking this could go very badly from here?

It is basically a national VAT that Trump was unilaterally able to impose without going through Congress.

Right now there is a case working through The Court of International Trade in New York that no Emergency exists that allows Trump to impose these tariffs.

This Obscure New York Court Is Set to Decide Fate of Trump’s Tariffs

Trade Court Grills Government Over Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ Tariffs

The federal court, which has nationwide jurisdiction over tariff and trade disputes, operates for the most part in obscurity, rarely garnering a mention in major publications and staying off the radar of most attorneys.

“Most lawyers will get out of law school without knowing that it exists,” said Lawrence Friedman, a partner at law firm Barnes, Richardson & Colburn LLP who specializes in litigation at the court.

The court will step into the limelight this week in a lawsuit brought by New York-based wine importer V.O.S. Selections and four other small businesses who say President Trump doesn’t have the authority to impose the tariffs. Other challenges have been filed in the court and in federal district courts around the country, but the V.O.S. case is front and center so far.

So it's possible the whole farrago could be ruled illegal and completely fizzle-out? I mean, even if it goes to the Supreme Court Injustices it seems possible even they are fed up with the whole business at this point. Aside from everything else it's getting pretty tedious (Up, down, up again, down again...could the tariffs not at least go sideways or something once in a while?)

I expect the GQP to just ignore it, appeal it, etc...

It would throw a huge monkey wrench into the process. I expect that the court will rule the tariff's are not legal under IEEPA and Trump will appeal to SCOTUS.

A loss for the president could scramble much of his trade agenda and affect how other countries negotiate with the U.S. If Trump ultimately is barred from imposing tariffs under IEEPA, there are a variety of other statutes he might try to use to accomplish something similar, though none provide as open-ended and expansive authority as he claimed here.

Oh word? I was confidently told by the admin they could renegotiate the totality of US global trade in 90 days no problem.

Trump says US will set new tariff rates for scores of countries

President says Washington lacks capacity to strike deals with every nation

Even if you are an evil asshole planning to use Tariffs as a cudgel to extort unfair trade deals from other countries, the way a sane evil asshole would do that, is to only do this to one country at a time, to have the maximum effect on the target, and minimum effect back home.

Only an insane evil moron would start a trade war with every country in the world at the same time. That would be like starting a shooting war with every powerful country simultaneously...

What we have going on is that 1) Trump thinks tariffs are free money and 2) Trump thinks trade is bad and should stop.

That these ideas are in direct opposition to each other apparently is not a problem for him.

As Londo said, "Only an idiot fights a war on two fronts. Only the heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Idiots would fight a war on twelve fronts."
