has got to stop. UGH, those cars are so ugly. Just primer it in black if you are going for that half finished, crappy look, but for the love of God, stop with the flat black finishes, whether painted or plasti dipped, they look horrendous.
looks great on certain cars imho, looks like ass on Honda Civics and most of the cars I see it on though. I saw a BMW that had been wrapped in matte black vinyl and it was jaw dropping.
Its a matter of personal taste - I think ever car linked looks half-finished or outright ugly. A deep, rich shine looks way better to me than that Plasti Dip look.
I saw a flat black Cadillac CTS (not V) the other day. It looked almost like spray paint...I think I saw a flat black late-ish (mid-late 2000's?) Camry relatively recently as well. Weird.
The orangish-reddish BMW looks cool. The Lotus looks okay-ish. Would look better with all the matte and gloss parts reversed.
Everything else in this thread, yup, does look like ass. Somehow the color of unpainted aftermarket parts has become some kind of hipster-douche take on turning a new car into a 'rat rod.'
I was thinking about doing it on my Challenger. The factory black paint job shows too many swirls. Depends on the cost of wrapping it vs outright changing the color.
I don't generally like it, but I recently saw a flat black Aventador with orange calipers and it looked amazing. I think the stealth-fighter lines of that car work well with flat black.
Whew, glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. True, some super/exotic cars look "OK" with the matte finish, but for every one of those I see, I think, wow, that car would be awesome all glossed up and shiny.
Would take the right car for me to do it. I personally dont thinks its necessary to hate on it however. If someone chooses to go frozen on say a 76 mustang II I would actually thank them for the smile
Weird stuff makes me smile all the time
Saw a matte black P38 Range Rover recently and I asked the guy why? He said the stock green made him want to vomit. good enough reason for me lol
IMO the only reason to paint a car flat black (or any flat color for that matter) is to hide crappy styling or bodywork. All of those flat-black cars look much better in gloss black:
Also note that all of the pictures sgrinavi posted have very bright over-head lighting that minimize the crappiness of a flat-black paint job. Most of the time IRL those cars will just look like amorphous blobs instead of beautiful automobiles.
Edit:
Satin black (semi-gloss) looks MUCH better than flat or matte black. The body lines are still visible (mostly). This is what the BMW "frozen" paint is IIRC.
Note how reflections don't immediately turn gray like they do on flat black, but it's not quite as sharp as gloss black. It's subtle, but it makes a huge difference in how the car appears IRL.
