Back when the 3D game market was just emerging, 3Dfx and Glide were a boon to the industry, not the burden you make them out to be.

Yup, Glide gave birth to the 3d industry. 3dfx is now abandoning it and if anyone cared to look, they'd see that the 5500 runs D3D better than Glide, it's not a one API card. In fact, it supports more useful API's than any other card. Some games certainly still are better in Glide, but that's not 3dfx's fault. If Glide hadn't existed many of the games we play may not even exist.

You need to read up on your history of the 3d gaming industry madthumbs. When 3dfx developed glide with their original Voodoo, there was no 3d gaming API. OpenGL was the only other "competing" API at the time. How many opengl games do you see today? 3dfx created glide because there was nothing else and they needed something to show off the abilities of their cards.
