The TIV

Watching storm chasers a couple of days ago, one of the guys is filming an IMAX movie in a pimped up dodge truck with three axles, the TIV 2. The original TIV is in the link above.
Here is the TIV-2. And here is a demo about it.

I want one fairly badly. When end-times come and the country is a desolate wasteland, this is how I want to traverse it.

That thing is an amazing pile of crap. While it looks cool, an eight ton vehicle that is constantly dropping tires and snapping axles is rather impractical.

What's really funny is Dr. Wurman with his mobile radar unit can't find a tornado to save his life, while Reed with only a laptop and video camera (and surprisingly hot meteorologist girlfriend) is much more successful so far. And Wurman basically calls him a hack. TFF!

Sounds like the movie 'Twister'

Are you basing that on a single episode?

Actually two. Why? Even in the first episode Wurman was bitching about how Reed is only in it for the money. He sounded so much like Bill Paxton from Twister I was expecting Philip Seymour Hoffman to jump in the van asking if they could stop by Aunt Meg's.

As long as somebody in the show doesn't mention an F5 and cause the room to go silent as everybody is reverant over its awesomeness, we're still ahead.

The TIV looks like something from a movie, but hopefully they can sort it out. I think ideally they would have borrowed a stryker from the military and figured some way to make it unable to get lifted up. Maybe carry drills on each corner and at the flick of a switch it drills itself into the ground, locking it in place, how awesome would that be?

Is there any engineering in it, or is it some guy slapping crap together hoping like hell it works??
Also, I can't stand watching that guy talk. For some reason, his expressions and mannerisms bother.

I'm sure it's the latter. Was it really necessary to install a hydraulic system to move the (completely useless) lower armor flaps? What is their purpose anyway? Unless they are perfectly flush with the ground, they'll just act like a big scoop for the wind to flip the vehicle. I think the only engineering involved thinking up what would look the coolest on TV. And it doesn't even succeed there.

What they should have done is start with a frame that could handle the load, like picking up a surplus Humvee chassis from the army or something.
