ATi has a lot less fan boys than nVidia.

You can recognise an nvidia fanboy when someone says 68U and 800XTPE are tied.

You can recognise an ATi fanboy when someone says 800pro and 68GT are tied or 700pro and 66GT are tied.

I'm not likely to buy an ATI card just because the one time I did the drivers were such a pain in the ass. The 9800 Pro was a widely used card... so I bought one and replaced my FX5900 @ FX5900 Ultra speed. At first I just used driver cleaner to remove the nVidia drivers, then installed the ATI drivers. Things worked fine for the most part, but there were some glitches in Far Cry. I ended up doing a clean install of Windows and all seemed fine at first. Then for some reason anti-aliasing stopped working. I tried every combination of forcing it in the drivers and using application preference and setting it in the game and nothing worked. So I used Driver Cleaner again to remove the ATI drivers and reinstall them, then anti-aliasing worked again... for about a week, then I had to remove and reinstall them again. I did a clean install once again hoping that would help... but it didn't... so for about 6 months I had to remove and reinstall the drivers about once a week to use anti-aliasing.
Then this past fall I upgraded to a BFG 6800GT OC. Removed ATI's drivers, installed nVidia's and it worked. I had some problems later while trying beta drivers, but none that required weekly attention.
Granted, that's not a problem that exists with every 9800 Pro... but it was a problem for me and has left a sour taste in my mouth.

You know, at stock speeds the X800XT is faster for sure. But by minimal margin i think. Also, everything i have read says that the best drivers for the 6800 Ultra are not even out yet. ATI had tons of issues with drivers not giving the full power of the 9800 pro when it was released. I see this as no different. I think Nvidia is about 2 driver updates away from trimming that margin with the X800XT to nil.

As for the x800pro, i think everyone already knows how it stacks up to the 6800GT.

So, with all that said, and prices similiar enough to not effect many decisions, Nvidia wins based on availability alone.

Remember, the X800XT is technology that is at its peak, it is revamped 9800 technology. Thats why it works better "now". It is simply a "super" 9800 pro, if you want to call it that. Nvidia's 6800 series is a brand new technology, and therefore its best days are ahead of it, just as the 9700/9800 pro's were when it was in its early stages. I don't think it takes too much to realize that the technology that already existed is going to be the better performer up front. the bugs and optimizations have already been worked out. Give the 6800U and GT about 2 or 3 months for drivers that better utilize its power, then we'll see where the performance stands.

BTW, ATI is about 1 more paper launch away from losing even more ground in the GPU market. When someone goes to newegg and has 20-30 ultras and GT's to pick through, and "1" OEM powercolor X800XT, it is not hard to see why so many are choosing Nvidia this go-around.

repost. read line #2 and #7 mr orange.

Here are some facts to fuel this flame war until it gets locked...

ATi's R500 architecture is superior and actually would be better off with SLi than nVidia's.
ATi's friend Sapphire who does a lot of ATi's PCB and SMT work is in the process of upgrading thier facilities.
ATi moved thier all major driver programmers near thier canadian central office a little over a year ago. Since then thier driver's have improved by leaps and bounds and are now superior to those of nVidia.
ATi will dominate the high-end market once the R520 hits market.
ATi will beat nVidia to a bloody pulp by working with 3Dlabs and releasing dual-gpu cards
ATi will start building nVidia a coffin by makin said dual-gpu cards SLi-able and very opengl friendly by using nVidias own chipset against it; nForce pro 2200+2050 = 40 PCIe lanes for true 2x x16 PCIe.
ATi isn't very worried about the PC market right now. There powering two next gen game consoles. Xenon (Xbox2) and whatever nintendo is coming out with.
ATi has a lot less fan boys than nVidia.

"prophecies" are another sign of fanboyism.:p

Maybe you can "prophecize" the near future a little better. When can I find a 800XT, 800XTPE, or 850's at ANY B&M Store?:D I mean it's only be like a year since they where released.

by that time the 7800 will roll around and nobody will give a crap.

They most certainly are.:)

Why exactly is anyone listening to the troll's "prophecies"? The guy has been here one day and has a whopping 106 posts...anyone want to wager whether he's just the OP on a new account?

This generation is really so close only fanboys care to argue anymore...there's a winner at each price point and no one company has them all. Just quit using half-logic to justify moot points...no more "ATi is teh winnar they have the x800XL at a mere 450 bucks where it sort competes with a 6800GT" or "The Ultra gets 25% higher FPS that the XT in a game that's capped at 60! nV = pwnage!!"

Quit ruthlessly fellating companies that are only interested in your wallet.

BTW these are full boxes, not display boxes. They have a sercurity thingy similar to the one they use on HD's.

I have still not seen a x800 in any flavor in person at any BB, Compusa, or Chips&Bytes. And I look at Video cards everytime I go for HOTDEALS:)

Thats nice, but its not that way at mine. So what does that tell you.

i wouldnt say that the 6xxx series is going to take over at all...ati has some great competetion comming in the form of the x800XL. thats IF they can avoid a paper launch.
what is the msrp? like $250-300? it competes with the GT for $100 less....

The 6xxx series already took over. See here:

Nvidia has 53% DX9 Marketshare, 67% of performance (high end) DX9 Marketshare

Yeah, I guess those gamers will get great frames with their 5200's.

Have you no dignity? You might as well have an ATI tattoo on your forhead next to the one that says "MOM". LOL you are too intense and tend to exaggerate.

If ATI could get there crap together and make their cards more available, the only people who would buy nvidia cards are the fanboys.

lol well ATI cant get their crap together and after 2 years in the sun they have become baked.

The only card to win this round for ATI is the X800XT-PE. A card which after 8 months is still hard to get. Down the line from there Nvidia simply outclasses them and it gets ugly when you start comparing the 6600GT to the X700s.

Questions to the ATI fans who claim the drivers are fine now:

- when did they fix fog table based fog in Direct3D (hint: never)

- when did they fix DirectDraw (hardware accelerated 2D) so thatplayers of "Armored Task Force" don't have to turn hardware 2D off to play their game? (Hint: they didn't)
http://www.war-forums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8316

- when will they take back that (apparently) they apply anisotropic filtering only to a given depth and not further. That is something in the newest drivers and obviously a benchmarking-tuning "optimization" (hint: they'll take it back soon as people encounter this with other games)
http://www.battlefront.com/dis...get_topic;f=8;t=004906

None of the above damages 3D games which came out in the last 6 months. Everybody who like to fire up older games every now and then better stays away from ATI.

I would actually consider getting a 6800 ultra but the damn thing wouldn't fit in my thermaltake soprano case.
