The point of this thread is to commend Ati for being erh Ati.
There was a time that any serious gamer should own a Voodoo card or if you were real serious and like spending a couple of weeks pay checks 2 voodoo cards(sli, yeah baby). 3dfx was king and held that position for quite sometime. I will go so far as to say no will ever dominate the gfx card industry like 3dfx did in the mid to late 90s.
Then along came Nvidia which in all their glory gave us a multitude of great products from tnt, tnt2 , to geforce. This is when Nvidia owned and toppled(kinda bought) 3dfx as King of the eye candy and fps. I will say that my visiontek Ti 4200(Walmart special) was single handedly the best card I have ever owned. It oc'ed like a mutha and held it's own until Doom 3, which I ll add still played the game but not at the levels of satisfaction the game is capable of. I bought that card because for some reason my voodoo 5 sh*t the bed, I turned on my computer and blamo There was no video, boo hoo. I was dead set on getting an fx seies card but after seeing my buddies alienware a-51 with 5600 ultra fall to its knees on 3dmark 03 I believe his score was in th the upper 2000s, and the someone who was playing halflife 2 on a 5700 ultra, I looked else where
I decided this time around I wanted to see what all the steam about Ati is all about and settled on a 9600xt. What a great card, The ability to overclock in its own drivers, temp display, small in size(compare it or any ati to any geforce on the market today). Nice all around package. But I had Doom 3 fever and wanted to see what it would take to run this game as it was intended. 9700pro, nice card excellent performance but wanted more bang. 9800 pro excellent card, awesome performance but still not top dawg. x800 pro DING DING DING. What a beast! This card is King and its not even the best one out. Now I know all of you are saying that Geforce cards are better for Doom 3 but I also play half life 2 and let me say we all know how the fx cards play on that game. Im sure that the 6800 series are great performer but I think Ati has really got a nice product line and that for the vast majority of people who cant afford X800 and 6800 cards there is no other choice than something from ati be it a 9600, 9700, or 9800 preferebly in the pro or xt flavor.
Just my 2 cents. Im sure Ill get a ton of flamers but this is my opinion and you cant take it from me. hehe
