It gives farmers that extra hour of sunlight for working. (main reason)
Studies have shown that it reduces the amount of traffic accidents in the evening since there is still daylight.
edit: Here, just read this. It has a lot of information regarding it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time
I agree that it can be annoying, but I know there are a lot of benefits and reasons for it; I had to do a research paper on DST in high school :awe:
Farmer's schedules are wide open. They can get up earlier if they want more light. Same goes with any business. It's not as though seasonal hours aren't kept anyway, regardless of DST. As far as the accidents/energy savings goes, the numbers are controversial, and don't equal more than a statistical anomaly either way. All it does is dick up people's internal clock, and affect their natural sense of time.
“I feel like I didn’t make the most of my extra hour from Daylight Savings Time.”
Doesn't it also save a bit of energy? We come home form work an hour earlier, so we can save a little bit of money heating our homes at night.
One example that comes to mind - in the summer, if you have more available hours to enjoy some free time in daylight, you'll do that, rather than being inside enjoying your free time under artificial lighting. Or something like that.I don't think it works the way you've written it, but I understand the idea. I don't buy into the theory. Energy gets used regardless of where you physically are. For the individual household, I don't think the personal savings would equal a rounding error by the end of the year, likewise for the company. One may pay slightly more, and the other slightly less, but countrywide, it balances out.
Daylight savings was for a time when farmers had to work harder and weren't subsidized by government.
I think we could safely do away with it.
I came in to work today... the security system has been an hour off since the last change and it still is !! so, my mind is blown there because I can't figure out why it's an hour off instead of evening out or being 2 hours off.
And then the phone system time is off too. All un needed problems.
So now in the morning I'll get to hear people complaining about how the phones are ringing an hours before they should be since people around here don't like to answer their phones til 8:30am even if they're ringing and they're already at their desk.
It's an anachronism that needs to be removed. I am sure if somebody in congress pushed to get it finally stopped and locked down one way or the other most would support it.
What is it everyone is wanting to get rid of? DST? Or are you wanting to stay on DST all the time? Or do you not care either way and just want them to stop changing the time?![]()
That's actually not a bad idea. When the HR people say I need the time sheet done by 2PM, I wouldn't need to check where the hell HR is located (New Jersey).Or just everyone use GMT all the time. Yeah it might be odd for a while to have the sun rise at 14:00, but at least it's consistent.
The lights in my office are on when people are inside even when it's mid July, so that doesn't change. The city lights work using light detectors, so that doesn't change. The light outside my porch uses motion sensors, so that doesn't change. The light next to my walkway uses light sensors, so that doesn't change either. I always drive with my headlights on so that doesn't change. And, overall, it saves energy in the US. (Something like 1.5 billion kilowatt hours.)
