Hell, I'm not even sure when to label somethings ironic. From what I understand (English teachers, professors), every little "ironic" occassion mentioned in Alanis Morissette's song, Ironic, doesn't have any irony. Not even getting a free ride when you've already paid. So here it is. Let's start the thread that correctly states how to use irony.

Here's one example:

<< Usage Note: The words ironic, irony, and ironically are sometimes used of events and circumstances that might better be described as simply ?coincidental? or ?improbable,? in that they suggest no particular lessons about human vanity or folly. Thus 78 percent of the Usage Panel rejects the use of ironically in the sentence In 1969 Susie moved from Ithaca to California where she met her husband-to-be, who, ironically, also came from upstate New York. Some Panelists noted that this particular usage might be acceptable if Susie had in fact moved to California in order to find a husband, in which case the story could be taken as exemplifying the folly of supposing that we can know what fate has in store for us. By contrast, 73 percent accepted the sentence Ironically, even as the government was fulminating against American policy, American jeans and videocassettes were the hottest items in the stalls of the market, where the incongruity can be seen as an example of human inconsistency. >>

irony: saying one thing while meaning another; having one event occuring that has an opposite meaning

So irony would be if you said "Man, I just love doing my math homework!" Many people seem to think that irony is basically just twisted humor or coicnidence.

Somewhat correct. My dictionary (Oxford, Tenth Edition, page 748) provides me with a better definition, though.

No, that would be sarcasm.

Agree with Elledan, that's sarcasm.

Alanis' Ironic is really just a series of bummers.

Example of irony as recalled from a Darwin Award:

Drunk guy walks up a ski hill after closing and removes the large plastic-covered padding from a chairlift pole. Walks further up the mountain, then proceeds to slide down the mountain on the padding. Manages to hit the pole he removed the padding from. Dies instantly.

Now THAT'S ironic. Or poetic justice. You decide.

That would qualify as irony according to the dictionary. It's damn funny as well :D

Just a grammatically incorrect and incoherent sentence.

I suppose, but the truck killed him, not the sugar. It would be much better if the sugar itself fell from a great height or buried him.

How about this sad irony:

Twentieth Century man dies from a disease as a result of the act of procreation, or pleasure: this disease is AIDS.

What man has in his nature to do so instinctively causes him to die. The irony is that if AIDS is spread throughout all communities no one will be able to procreate, which is arguably the purpose of our being.

End of human life, game over, what next!

How is it possible that in a thread about the correct usage of a word, not one person has copied and pasted from dictionary.com?

Well let me then:

i·ro·ny (r-n, r-)
n. pl. i·ro·nies

The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.
An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning.
A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect. See Synonyms at wit1.

Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs: ?Hyde noted the irony of Ireland's copying the nation she most hated? (Richard Kain).
An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity.

So my reading of this is that, in the now classic Morisette example a loose defintion of ironic would apply. ;)

Yes, the only irony in the Alanis Morisette song is the fact that the song contains no irony.

Never thought about it that way.
