I second (or third or whatever) those ideas.

Windows XP does everything I've ever needed with two exceptions.

1) Good networking with older Windows versions. Plug a crossover cable in between Win 98 and Win XP for example and try to get a network running. Sure you can do it, but it has all kinds of errors. For example its functioning depends on which computer is turned on first, or when one connects to the internet the other constantly attempts to connect as well - until you shut off the other computer.

2) I also want the old methods of working with shortcuts to the drives back. I always have a shortcut to the floppy, hard drive, and CD drive on my desktop. That way I can copy files to wherever I need without opening up My Computer. But in Win XP these are treated as shortcuts and not like drives. For example right click on those and hit properties and you don't get the Scan Disk or Defragment option anymore.

Make it so you can configure and enable a generic profile setupso everytime a new user logs in they don't have to configure IE, startmenu, etc etc.

Fast boot time.

Better integrated firewall and integrated anti-virus.

That's not going to happen. At least not the ant-virus part.

*cough*Monopoly*cough*

Adding features that people want is anti-competitive. It would put Symantec and McAfee out of business.

I want Explorer to start remembering my folder preferences better. It seems like I always have to change them back to the way I want.

Edit:

Whenever the majority of files in a folder is music files, you cannot sort them by date modified. That really gets to me sometimes.

1. When you move or copy files with explorer it should continue even if there is an error with one file ( I really hate that it stops) !!!!

Also when deleting files. Leave the ones that can't be deleted alone, dump the rest! (Especially when cleaning up temp dirs)

Properties on My Computer -> Advanced Tab -> User Profiles. Set up a user how you want everyone to be, log on as an admin, go to the above tab, pick that user, and hit the "Copy To" button. If you have all Files and Folders unhidden, browse to your C:\documents and settings\Default User directory and copy it there. Overwrite... new users will have those settings. Further configure the box by using Group Policy (Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc)

Automatic compression of files that haven't been accessed after a certain amount of time
Everything on the CD should be multi-threaded
Make outlook express handle newsgroup binaries better
Bring back BootVis
Theme support built-in to the OS so I don't need a theme patch
Built in support for iso and bin exploring on a basic level
More powerful built-in cd burning
Remove all legacy support or sell a legacy free version
Make dual-booting way easier than it is now

thats just off the top of my head, I could go on and on if I really wanted to

When I clear the cache... I mean to clear the whole damn sh!t!

Sometimes I have to clear them several time (or do it by hand) to get rid of the addresses and history. Also... make an option to disable history. Setting it to 0 doesnt help.

Extra "yes if" options would help too, like overwrite if newer, or larger
A realistic time estimate for file copys would be good too

Thats a good point. I bet internally they find lots of holes, but they just put them on a "to do" list when they get spare time or something, unless its found by a hacker before its fixed. They really need to focus on security.

You should be able to set a folder to any type you want. If WinXP sets a folder to a music folder, it's stuck as that no matter what you try to change it to.

Also, you should be able to search from Windows Explorer without permanently losing the left pane.

- The irritating phenomena by which ATAPI read errors over the IDE channel that an optical drive is connected to (which normally occur when multiple drives on the same controller but not channel are in use) have the ability to disable DMA and reinstate PIO mode. Drives me up the fvcking wall.

- The bug with explorer when dealing with the moving / manipulating of .avi files which causes a massive memory leak and requires editing the registry to fix.

- A better uninstall system which does not give the option for programs to be unlisted and allows even partially uninstalled programs to be removed comletely from the registry, the file system, startbar/desktop/etc.

- An install system simlar to previous 9x OS's in the regard that components are specifiable. Package options could be added. Allow user to completely customize installed components and boot up processes.

- Full retro support for previous OS's (DOS based) that might even include a virtual partition and driver support or some sort of emulating setup to give the ultimate in compatibility for old software and games.

- A single option to disable wizard modes across the board in favor of customizable templates for all aspects of windows functionality.
