I recently received the following pm from Common Courtesy:

Personal attack not needed - please correct ASAP

You would be suprised what is said about the German`s in very high places.
You would also be suprised the feelings concerning ww2 that are being dealt with even among such nations as France!!

You, thankfully, do not speak for all Europeans. I don't know about "very high places", but little of what you say would surprise me. You consistently show yourself to be a complete ass.

I refuse to edit the message. "Ass", according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is used to refer to a "an ignorant or stupid person". I maintain that JEDIYoda is both. This is not a personal attack, but rather a reflection on the content of JEDIYoda's posts.

Moreover, in the thread entitled "Israel the U.S. and the West Bank Settlements" I was attacked by Common Courtesy and JEDIYoda for using the BBC as a source, given that they both feel that the BBC has a clear bias in favour of the Palestinians. I have the utmost respect for the journalism of the BBC, whereby, to my mind, Common Courtesy and JEDIYoda are both asses. I firmly believe that the posts made by Common Courtesy on the aforementioned thread display a level of bigotry and bias that is much more deserving of censure than referring to someone as an ass.

Furthermore, and again in the thread entitled "Israel the U.S. and the West Bank Settlements", JEDIYoda referred to me as an idiot on more than one occasion:

Originally posted by: JEDIYoda
As I stated earlier your an idiot.....
You are laying this whole mess at the feet of the israeli`s when you have no clue about what actually happenned!
You cite reports by newpapers that are anti - Israeli without realizing their are two sides to every story.
We all agree that israel needs to sit down and decide once and for all what needs to be done.

But at the same time I am making it known that your a very one sides person who actually believes that all this is Isrels fault. That type of thinking couldn`t be further from the truth.

Sorry that your opinion is very one sided and steeped in half truths!

Given that Common Courtesy has been actively posting on this thread and is aware that JEDIYoda has referred to me as an idiot (a synonym of ass) more than once, I can only presume that he condones such language when it is directed against me (the post remains unedited at the time of writing), or when used by JEDIYoda. Clearly two wrongs do not make a right; however, I have no problem with the fact that JEDIYoda feels that I am an idiot, nor do I believe that he should be prevented from referring to me in this manner if he strongly disagrees with my posts. Likewise, I defend my right to refer to someone as an ass on the basis of the content of their posts.

In all the posts that I have made to date, I have never attempted to insult anyone. Nevertheless, I have expressed complete disdain for the ideas and opinions expressed by various other posters and, assuming that I am not banned, I will continue to do so. When someone states that Europe remains focused on the events of WW2 and gripped by fear of Germany, I feel a need to point out that, as a result of these statements, the person in question is an ass. When someone states that the BBC displays bias in favour of the Palestinians, I also refer to this person as an ass.

As a matter of principle, I refuse to remove the term "ass" from the post in question. I fully understand that this involves disobeying an instruction issued by a moderator; however, I am willing to accept any consequences. Moreover, I would also suggest that, by the standards of the forum, "ass" is a relatively innocent term that should never have been cause for concern.

meh... i dont think, considering how vulgar these forums get, that 'ass' is that bad.

hell, ive called people dumb phucks now and then... 'ass' is kinda tame. there's quite a few threads in P&N where people call others asshats...

as long as it doesn't denegrate into f this and f u ... vulgarity is a good way to let off steam ;)

No vulgarity was intended: I refer to ass as in donkey, an animal traditionally associated with stupidity, rather than the area of the body we sit on.

I have not noticed bias against non-Americans. What I have noticed, as I have stated above, is a great deal of bigotry on your part.

I feel that you were wrong to ask me to remove the term "ass", given that many other users, including moderators, frequently use terms that are much more open to criticism.

Incidentally, both Godless and myself are non-American English speakers; however, as I disagree with Godless on this point, I have no wish to pursue this particular issue.

From my personal collection:

Idiot is a description of a person and their capabilites
Ass is a description of a donkey or a rear end of an object.

It is unfair to the donkey to describe a person as a donkey :D or too vague for the other explanation.

Feel free to use idiot instead of being an ass

What personal collection might that be? Common Courtesy's Dictionary of Contrived Definitions? I would like a copy to ensure I do not infringe by way of calling someone a squirrel or a moose as opposed to something more traditionally offensive.

I chose my handle very deliberately.

1) to imply the guidelines that I use as a Moderator
2) to allow users the opportunity to think on the impact that their words will have when read by others.

There are roughly less than 100 users that pop up on my radar - and about half pop off without any other concerns.

The racism in that thread bothers me much more than the personal insults.

I think you just proved the previous posts contention that you are not understanding Other English terminology. I feel the OP is correct and you are in the Wrong in this situation.

I hope I am not expected or required to keep up on all bastardize uses of the English language.

Each Mod has their limits on what they will accept.
I have never vacationed anyone on the first time that I have seen a phrase used. Warnings have been issued publicly or PMs sent depending on the circumstances.

Repeat occurances are not tolerated.

I appreciate that you can't be all knowing on such matters, but once it's pointed out it seems that just sticking to your original position no longer makes much sense. Hell, even I know that "Ass" meant as the OP used it and haven't stepped foot outside North America. It really is no different than saying "Idiot" as the OP pointed out and was called. So unless you call both, then you'll be creating a descriminating tone.

"Bastardized English" is merely a matter of perspective.

That's fine and all but we can't punish members for less than some us Mods post. As much as I respect you ( you do practice what you preach) I think you need to lighten up some.

I think this thread is mostly personal anger towards Common Courtesy being brought out over a rather mundane post. Seems pointless.

The thread is entirely pointless; however, given that I am unwilling to comply with a moderator's instruction, it is also necessary. I would argue that the need for the thread should never have arisen.

I refuse to edit the term "ass": it is a perfectably acceptable term and glaringly appropriate in the case in question.

I refuse to refrain from using the term "ass" in the future: this is not "bastardised English", it is standard English. I find it amusing that a moderator would seek to suggest that this word only belongs in "bastardised" versions of the language in order to attempt to defend an action wherein his judgement was clearly clouded. There is no linguistic justification for the moderator's instruction.

The entry for ass in The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary reads as follows:

ass. 1. A quadruped, Equus asinus, smaller than a horse, with long ears, tufted tail, and dark stripe across the shoulders; a donkey (Proverbially regarded as the type of clumsiness, ignorance, and stupidity) 2. An ignorant or stupid person.

Clearly ass can also refer to a person's arse; however, most users will be able to identify meaning on the basis of context and usage: "she has a nice ass" as opposed to "she is an ass". There is absolutely no room for misinterpretation, unless someone is neurotically preoccupied with arses.

Look at my posting history, do you see evidence of vulgarity?

I am not angry with anyone.

As far as I am concerned, if no action is to be taken against me, the thread can be locked and I will be on my way.

Ohhh...gotcha.

Yeah this is a strange non-issue then.

Nevermind. :)
