40W CW output isn't that impressive for quickly destroying things. It's achievable with something about the size of a larger handheld torch and visible beam (445nm).

A petawatt pulsed source would be more impressive as its impact would look similar to blowing up conductors with a megajoule sized cap bank.

When you're talking CW beams in the megawatt range you aren't portable that's for sure!

Ionizing the air (creating a conductive plasma channel) with a suitable laser would be neat to shoot into an active cumulonimbus cloud. Triggered lightning return stroke without using a rocket and carrier!

*sigh*

... And here I was, thinking about better power reserves for stereo power amplifiers. :p

Problem is when the reserve gets exhausted the sound suffers. There's no substitute for a proper power supply that can supply continuous power providing your output stages are properly cooled. ;)

Sorry haven't had time to read the article, but 20x as powerful as electrolytic caps? Being discharged in five time constants, it would still not be useful as a battery. Cells and caps serve different roles. I'll have to ask my DC circuitry professor about this...

Absolutely true: the reserves stored in the amplifier's caps are only one piece. The power still has to come from the device's power supply, (and the wall, ultimately), and fast/accurately enough to keep the caps charged. Not a problem in most home equipment, especially at the high end. Portable devices, OTOH, often have little or no reserves.

So my thought was a better/smaller capacitor tech might help make our iDevices sound better... If only we could find a way to Banish lossy file types from the earth. :)

Edit - because necro threads about capacitors should be equipped with gratuitous amplifier~pornography

So...

Could I make one of these graphene super-super-capacitors myself? I wonder what would happen if someone charged-up a DVD-size one and left it sitting around for someone to accidentally touch...
