The Stealth Bicycle Riders In My Neighborhood

Ok...so I live just across the tracks from a really bad neighborhood. Let me just say it this way; you drive about 8 blocks to the east and the culture changes to the hip-hop type.

So, we have these kids that ride their bikes at night. They dress in all black and wear hoodies. Even the bikes they ride are black, including the wheels and the spokes! Nobody can see them and they run a huge risk of being hit by a car. They have no reflectors, no lights and even wear black footware. I'm not sure what they are up to, but something tells me that they don't want to be seen too much and that they are probably not up to anything good. Frankly, as dark as it's been lately, the only way I discovered them was due to cars coming off the side streets with their lights on. They are pretty quiet when they coast by. Is this some kind of fad? I guess they can see and so they don't worry too much about getting hit. I still don't like the idea. They should be home this late at night. Where are the parents?

Up to no good and riding a bike with out a light is illegal. I have been stopped by many pigs for that reason on my bike.

Kids r dumb. People need to realize cars seeing them is not enough.

I damn close to killing somebody two weeks back. I was going 55 on a country road at night and immediately to the side of the yellow line, barely past it because there was no good shoulder to walk on, is somebody walking in all dark clothes. I didn't see them until I was a couple car lengths away. I strongly suspect they have no idea how dangerous what they were doing was. Cars veer a couple of feet in their lane all the time and if I'd done it at that time, no more dark clothed person walking on the road.

Are there any routes you can take at night that have street lights? That would improve visibility greatly, but if you have none in your area, I guess just be as careful as possible that you don't hit any stealthers.

They are the lookouts, cruising around looking for cops. They are working for drug dealers, car thieves, burglars, etc. When they see a police car, they call the people they are working for so they can get away before the cops arrive.

It's the cagers fault. They don't pay attention. It's easy to see someone wearing all black, riding a black bike with no reflectors and eating black berries in the pitch black. Damn cagers.
