The SSDs of CES

yes insane write speeds so you can wear out the 10K write cycles. lol.

consumers do 95-99% read, 1-5% write.

enteprise needs SLC+MLC (aka eMLC) to get higher write cycles
 
Based on the latest article on the Cosair SSD, the last line hints that the Intel is probably not going to be out this month or possibly next, but before May.
 
Micron and Corsair are supposed to be out this month or early February if I read the anandtech article correctly, I'm in the market for an SSD for my builds. Intel needs to do something but I figure they're going to be too late. I'm not waiting for May. And looking at the performance for the C400 and P3-256 from Corsair, I'll just go that route.

So, I've got some Amazon cards to spend. I was looking at either the Intel 120 GB G2 SSD or the 160 GB G2 SSD. Should I wait until the new releases occur, or are prices on the G2s likely to remain pretty stable until inventory clears? Any thoughts on Intel vs. the newer OCZ models?

Unless the new G3 has had changes since the specs were announced, Intel drives will get smoked in performance. However some people are more comfortable with them and feel they are more reliable.

I would wait right now, prices should drop to clear inventory for the G3 and the nature of these next gen drives are they are built on 25nm which makes it cheaper to produce drives with more storage.

Some of the 256gb next gen drives are at $1.6 per GB and I'm seeing deals even lower for current gen drives. If you do want a drive now though, the Intel 120GB drive has lots of sales usually. A 128GB Kingston can be found for $149 at newegg. I'm not sure however as to the quality of the controller or the drive itself.

Most people have advised me to go with an Intel, but I've been hearing of the performance of the newer OCZ drives. The problem I have with third-party vendors (esp. Kingston) is that they have no many different models that I don't know which models to look at.
 
I know what you mean, and even a slower Intel drive is going to give you a hell of a lot more performance than whatever HDD you're using. Just be on the lookout for deals. The 120gig drives go on sale now for about $190 though when they first came out they were $149.

The 120 GB regularly goes for $220-$230 on Amazon and since I have the gift cards, I was thinking of going that route. The problem is that I don't want to buy the Intel G2 and then next month, something much faster comes out. I've heard conflicting views on the new releases -- most say you won't notice the speed difference, but I saw some people saying they're expected to be much, much faster. I don't know what to believe.
 
The specs on Intel's G3 are already out, so you can see if its worth it to wait. They should be coming out in the next few months, I was hoping for a timeline from CES but didn't see anything mentioned.
 
I'm more interested in price cuts than anything. I'm just getting an SSD for gaming so any SSD will do (I believe), but I kinda want at least 100 GB for ideally ~$150.

I did see the Kingston one, but I'd like to avoid the MIR for now.
 
I'll say i've had zero problems with the microcenter G2 drive. solid since the firmware update. in osx and win7. rock!

But would i use sandforce in business? hellz no. Intel all the way.

You never get fired for choosing intel 😉 especially when that server group is costing you $500K - you pick an AMD and anything goes wrong - you get the axe.

I'm picking up a SB and Mobo combo at Microcenter today, but am going to wait for the new gen SSD's to put it all together. Gonna be a hell of a time waiting, but I kind of want to see the maximum effect of my new build.

Going from DDR2 to DDR3, q9550 to 2500k, and HDD to SSD individually might not be stunning, but I'm hoping the simultaneous upgrade will produce quite a noticeable effect.

Going from hhd to ssd alone is noticeable. I did it for my dads laptop and it was crazy. What's annoying me is that there are no prices announced and no definate date.

HDD to SSD is pretty stunning, as AznAnarchy99 pertained to.
