The sound effects heard in Planet Earth has to be fake.

I love the show as we all do. And if you watch the extra features it shows a super expensive 3000+mm camera mounting on a helicopter with a powerful image stabilizer that absolutely negates the harsh vibrations by being mounted on the helicopter. Thus it produces absolutely smooth panning and general recording.

Then I started to wonder about recording sound effects. They have to be fake right? How can you record sound from hundreds of yards away so accurately? The 'behind the scene' footage shows just how freaking loud the helicopter buzzing is with the camera. But in the post-production clips, you hear the noise of animals chewing food and etc. That's ridiculous.

They must record a scene with the super loud chopper noise then dub it with fake sound effects later.

What also doesn't make is when they show a fast forwarding footage of some lush vegetation flourishing in mere seconds. This is also accompanied by a slithering and bustling sound effect. That HAS to be fake.

Any thoughts?

I'm watching the scene where it shows a disgusting amount of krills and plankton swarming. This is accompanied by a sand-through-the-fingers sound effect. Yeah, that's absolutely made-up for the audience.

Yeah, I guess the show never pretended all the sound is natural. But your avg audience hears it as so.

Their only other option would be to overlay some classical music or something similar. The nature sounds make it sound more....eh, natural.

Silent background noise, or that of the helicopter, or even the muttered cursing of that poor bastard as he waits for that damn bird for 2 weeks would suck for the audience. (well, the latter might offer a certain appeal to some...)

Planet Earth (British version) on HD-DVD was incredible. I have zero complaints about it and I consider it a MUST watch.

I've been watching (downloading) the newest BBC Power of the Planet series and this is pretty amazing too. I highly recommend it.

some mics are set up from the ground, probablyh with parabolic mic as linked above

though its absolutely AMAZING , no matter what stabilizing technology they used, to get a steady picture with a 3000mm lens

Well I'm sure the sounds are real for the most part. They no doubt had to edit out the background noise, but that is easily achievable with a modern editing studio. In other words, what we are seeing and hearing is likely real...just post processed a bit for our viewing pleasure.

90% of tv and film insert sound effects post production. They may record sound while in the field, but 'sweeten' it in post. The main dialog is also frequently re-recorded.

If you've ever been scuba diving the ocean is freaking loud! All kinds of crunching, clacking noises, etc espeically around a reef.
