Although songs change my mood, I try to keep them from changing my philosophy. Though, I'll admit, Sunday, Bloody Sunday (U2), American Pie (Don McLean) and almost any Talking Heads song with a serious message to it are some songs that have profound message.

row your boat
...gently
down the stream
merrily...
life is but a dream

I was so surprised to see this already listed. :)
This truncated version is my most valuable mantra.

yikes... one song? I think I would need an entire album... here's a few off the top of my head:

Bob Dylan - Blowin' In The Wind
Cat Stevens - If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out
Indigo Girls - Closer To Fine
Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah (but I like Jeff Buckley's rendition best)
Sarah McLachlan - Elsewhere
Simon & Garfunkel - Sounds Of Silence
Who - The Seeker
David Bowie - Space Oddity
James Taylor - Shed A Little Light

THE DECLINE
by NOFX

"and so we go... on with our lives.... we know the truth.. but prefer lies...
lies are simple.. simple is bliss...
why go against tradition when we can... admit defeat.. live in decline...
be the victim of our own design....
the status quo.. built on suspect...
WHY WOULD ANYONE STICK OUT THEIR NECKS?...
fellow members.. we got ours...
I'de like to introduce you to our host...
he's got his.. and I've got mine..
meet the decline"

Isla, I think, hidden deep in the world is a school that preserves and transmits the Ancient Truth. Sometimes they refer to themselves as we friends or people like us. Anyway I always hear such a strange and haunting message in this song, Ride Captain Ride by the Blues Image:

Seventy-three men sailed up
From the San Francisco Bay,
Rolled off of their ship
And here's what they had to say.

"We're callin' everyone to ride along
To another shore,
We can laugh our lives away
and be free once more."

But no one heard them callin',
No one came at all,
'Cause they were too busy watchin'
Those old raindrops fall.

As a storm was blowin'
Out on the peaceful sea,
Seventy-three men sailed off
To history.

Ride, captain ride
Upon your mystery ship,
Be amazed at the friends
You have here on your trip.

Ride captain ride
Upon your mystery ship,
On your way to a world
That others might have missed.

(Instrumental)

Seventy-three men sailed up
From the San Francisco Bay,
Got off their ship
And here's what they had to say.

"We're callin' everyone to ride along
To another shore,
We can laugh our lives away
And be free once more."

Ride, captain ride
Upon your mystery ship,
Be amazed at the friends
You have here on your trip.

Ride, captain ride
Upon your mystery ship,
On your way to a world
That others might have missed.

Ride, captain ride
Upon your mystery ship,
Be amazed at the friends
You have here on your trip.

Nothing Else Matters - Metallica

"Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matter..."

Maybe I'm just impossibly shallow, but I don't let songs influence my philosophy on anything. I find songs that reflect my mood at the time, songs that evoke images from my childhood, but I use my life experiences, my faith, my patriotism and my caffeine level influence my philosophy. I don't see the point in letting someone else's words replace my own.

Just my one cent. ;)
