So, the only real socialist in the Senate, Bernie Sanders, has this idea to fix our elections, or at least the registration part.
Starting in 2010 when the Census Bureau does its census give them the responsibility.
The socialist idea is that as long as you are having someone go around and determine how everyone is in America, just have them add all who they identify as citizens to the registered voter list.
Of course, it would still allow people or organizations to register people on their own, but with 99.999 percent of people already registered organizations would have so few possible unregistered voters they wouldn't exist, and individuals who the census missed could still register on their own.
And every year thereafter the Census Bureau would add the new eligible voters and remove those who died.

Darn socialists. It's almost as if they want to fix the problem.

I'm pretty ok with a lot of people not voting.

and I don't think people not registering to vote is the/a problem.

And under the plan people would be free not to vote.

The original census is usually by mail, not by person.
The person comes after the mail is not returned or for sampling verification.

Yeah, exactly. I think the problems come when the states try to clean up all of the invalid registrations, like people who have moved and are registered to vote at both old and new address.

Voting eligibility should be automatic, just like selective service. This whole BS about registering is absurd.

Keep a federal database of addresses, and have it automatically updated when someone moves into a house or rents an apartment.

Imagine if everything was like voting... You could just not register with the IRS, and not have to pay taxes.

You have far too much faith in federal databases. Ask all the veterans how they feel about all the accidental leaks the VA has experienced with its veterans databases, and the resulting privacy violations. Making a known problem bigger is not a solution.

Though quite brief, I just had a Chris Matthews tingle moment.

Interesting point you brought up actually. What kind of technologies are they using for most of their electronic records (not just voter registration)? I was under the impression that is was "behind the times" to say the least thanks to funding. If this is true then it is worth spending money to upgrade such things right? I mean it would save money and increase security in the long run considering they are never going away right? I am thinking there is much money to be saved in many of their programs and services by doing that.

I'm in law, not IT, so I don't know much about the form of these electronic databases; I only know that they've been leaked in the past and will probably be inadvertantly leaked in the future, and there's been definite legal repercussions. Any IT person knows there's an inherent tension between access and security when it comes to information, and I just wanted to point that out before we start giving tons of personal information to the gov't. It's just a lot more complicated issue than it seems, especially with the fluidity of our population. I'm really not surprised there are problems, even today.

every state should adopt our rules because they actually work.

show up at the polls with proof of address and an ID, sign an oath that you are who you say you are, register/update you registration, vote.

not to mention that we have a full paper ballot to serve as a backup.
