The single BEST DVD burner on the market

warcrow

Lifer
Ok guys, my DRU-510A is on its last leg. Please recommend me an internal or extrenal DVD burner that supports dual-layer and single layer burning. Price isnt really an issue. I just want quality.

Thanks guys.

*UPDATE 1/6/04*

I ordered the NEC ND-3520A! Thanks guys!

They changed to 3520A now, right? Just noticed that newegg suddenly went out of stock with the 3500A's and has a bunch of 3520A's...same drive though I think *shrug*

Well this IS coming from experience.
Plextor is the onyl drive I will ever buy!
the 716A is the absolute best dual layer burner in my opinion!
And i've tried alot of them...

No kidding? What other drives did you try? Also, what comes with the retail package?

...plus, the NEC is half the price. I know I said price isnt really an issue, but is it worth the $70 price diff?

Plextor hasn't been worth the money for a long time. Companies like Lite-On came along and showed us we could pay half the price for a great CD-RW, and now companies like NEC are doing the same thing with DVD-RW.

ND-3520A; about $70 shipped from Newegg.

How does that review help? Unless I missed something the Plextor wasn't even a part of it so it cannot be compared.

I just bought a 716SA since it is one of the only SATA optical drives on the market and I am happy with it so far.

Edit: Oops sorry warcrow, I was looking at a previous post and thought that you were making reference to the Plextor being all hype, but you didn't even say that so disregard my ranting, I apologize.

I have 2 716a's. The retial package comes with a Plextor branded DVD+R, Roxio DVD Max, Plex tools, ECDC DVD, and Roxio photo suite 5. Oh, also an ATA IDE cable. It's also a very quiet, and fast drive.

I personally don't use all the software included, but I thought it was a nice package. 🙂

I've had too many generic brands go bad after a year or so. No review is going to tell me that.

Since when are NEC and Lite-On generic brands? Ok forget Lite-On, they burn out too fast. I've just got on the NEC band wagon, NEC 3520A w/ modified firmware. NEC 3500A w/ modified firmware burns the best quality DVD, 3520A will easily follow that trend.

I can't speak for NEC personally. I haven't used one for an extended length of time. This has just been my general experience.

However, I do have a Mistumi 4x CD-ROM from '95 that went through a fire, and then was hosed down. It still works fine. Albeit very slowly by today's standards.

I have used Sony's and NEC's and Lite-On, and honestly none of them compare to the plextor.
You get what you pay for is all I have to say.
Sure the other drives im sure are good..but if you want a work horse of a drive to last you a long time there is no comparison.
Get a Plextor

nec is fine. try finding out what those rebranded drives are.

you can pay a lot less if you are trying to save money by getting maddog or whatever officemax sells.

Get a NEC 3500a because burners are obsolete so fast what's the point. Your next thread will be about HD or BluRay burners which will be out this year.

You have a good point there. I give my old hardware to family members though, otherwise they'd still be using a Mistumi 4x CD-ROM, or something comparable. 😀

I own the NEC ND-3500A. It rocks my world. With the proper firmware hack, and some DVD+Rs, you can do bitsetting. if you're not familiar with that, it lets you set a bit on the DVD+R to make it look like an actual factory-made DVD (or DVD-ROM), boosting its compatibility through the roof. Very cool. Not sure if the Plextor can do it or not.

Yes, bitsetting is possible for Plextor DVD burners through PlexTool and Nero 6.3. I loath Plextor only because there are so many options on the market right now yet they still charge 2x as much as everyone else. Well, at least they came down in price compare to the old days. I remember buying a Plextor 8x20 CDR and 40x CDROM, both SCSI, for close to $600, then another $200 for the Adaptec SCSI controller. Damn, that was crazy.

nd-3500a or nd-3520a are currently among the best. plextor is plainly overpriced and are overhyped. i speak from experience and other people's experiences.

Probably the BenQ 1620. Best official firmware support including support of speed overburning of a large number of different media and free upgrades (1600->1620 firmware flash to get DL, 1620->1620Pro firmware flash to get 4X DL), official support of bitsettings, best reader for disc quality scans, excellent burn quality on a variety of DVD media ranging from CMC to top-quality MCC and TY media.
