So the guy across the hall from me is trying to install the Sims, but every time the installer initializes, XP says that NTVDM.exe has performed an illegal operation. We tried replacing the exe file and ntvdmd.dll from my computer with no effect, despite the fact that the game installs fine on my machine. Any ideas?

The ntvdm.exe process is used when you run DOS or 16-Bit software on your windows pc. It will emulate the old DOS/16-bit os to allow older programs to run. If you are running DOS based (or 16-bit) programs on your computer, you should leave this process running.

ntvdm.exe is flagged as a system process and does not appear to be a security risk. However, removing NT DOS Virtual Machine may adversly impact your system.

The Spy Bot database currently registers ntvdm.exe to Microsoft.

This is part of Microsoft Windows (NT).

ntvdm.exe is related to cmd.exe, wing.dll, wing32.dll, wjview.exe, awlhut32.dll, d3d8.dll, wow32.dll, wowexec.exe.

Errr.. I don't know why XP would even need a 16-bit VM for The Sims to run. Something kinda fishy there. If it's related to d3d8.dll though, perhaps try upgrading DirectX on his system?
