fuzzy, would you recommend the 1.3v mod on a GT card with a standard heatsink and RAM cooling ?? I am in line for an EVGA 7900GT SC and it appears to be using the standard 7600GT HSF. I am not against buying an aftermarket vid cooler, I just prefer to keep the card as close to stock as possible (even tho EVGA warranties it with an aftermarket cooler!).

Ohh, and great post and guide as well.

If you want a cheap aftermarket cooler, just get the NV Silencer.

Also, you might want to add this into the OP cause some other people are also having this problem and I think I found a fix to it.

Some people after they do their voltmod's, can sometimes get the video card to make the screen go in and out (like turning black then going back to desktop, then turning black) in some never ending cycle.

Well I belive that the problem has to do with the memory vmod. I'm not saying that just doing the mod causes the problem (cause it doesn't). I belive that when you did the memory vmod, either some of the lead got somewere it shoudln't have, or you just wern't neat enough.

Now I found to fix this problem, first clean of the memory vmod area (a general area, get all around it, and especially good at the resistor it's self) with some alcohol. Then take an eraser on a pencil and clean off the reisitor gently (and a little around it too). Then redo some more alcohol to clean it off again.

After you cleaned it, you can reapply the memory vmod a little neater and you probably shouldn't have the problem anymore.

I know all this cause I did both vmod's. Then I was have a lot of artifacting (as in I did something really wrong) so I reversed both vmod's. Now the vgpu mod I could clearly see was clean, so I knew something was up with the memory vmod (cause I thought I cleaned it off enough but I really didn't ). Just be sure to clean off that memory resistor real good if you do reverse the vmod's.

Yup. Just get an aftermarket cooler to be on the safe side. The stock cooler is REALLY easy to take off anyway, and just about as easy to put back on.

Both of my $2.99 Harbour Freight multimeters came with a regular 9V battery installed. I really don't know how they make any money on them.

If people want instant gratification, HF has lots of B&Ms:

I got my MMs at the Raleigh store.

how fast are you running the mem? are you sure you aren't stressing the vrm's? have you tried just changing the freq of the vrms?

Thanks and updated! I'd always thought HF was solely an online place. Guess I was REALLY wrong.

Great Guide! I'm a newbie and a little bit nervous about this, but you make it look so simple. After we change the Volts does it automatically increase the clock? If not, what program do we use to adjust them?

I'm also looking into after market cooling and have seen some people mention the Zalman VF900 for the Video cooler and was wondering what people though about that cooler or other coolers.

Finally, I really know nothing about additional video RAM coolers if anyone has a suggestion.

Thanks!

When you change the volts it does not automatically change the clock. The purpose over upping the voltage is to have the option of clocking higher than what you could do at stock voltage.

I use Powerstrip to up my clock speeds. Others use Rivatuner or Coolbits (a registry addition that unlocks clock frequencies in your Nvidia properties tab - Desktop, properties, advanced, Nvidia)

As far as aftermarket air coolers, I'm afraid I don't know much about them since I'm on watercooling and don't keep up with aircooling anymore. As for RAM coolers, get some type of RAM sink for BGA style RAM.

ok, nifty that makes sense.

So what would we want to clock it to with coolbits after your mod?

I also googled for the RAM coolers and found these:

http://www.xoxide.com/swiftech-mc14-copper-bga-ramsinks.html

Is there a particular brand you recommend?
I was also wondering how many I will need?
And are they something I could use to cool other PC parts as well?

You seem pretty knowledgeable about hardware mods, do you know any good ways to cool the PWMIC on a MOBO, mine is hitting 57C at load?

Sorry about all the questions.

You basically want to clock it to however high it can go while still being stable. It varies from card to card, but for maximum overclock I recommend not using Coolbits but instead something like Rivatuner or Powerstrip. If you check this thread you'll get some ideas on how high other people are getting.

The Swiftech RAMsinks are nice, but a little expensive? I use Vantec Icebergs, but they're not nearly as sexy as the Swiftechs. Whatever brand you get make sure it's copper and not aluminum. Might as well go with something that conducts heat better.

You need 8 ramsinks. You can also use them for cooling other things such as MOSFETs. I may get another set of RAMsinks just for this purpose.

I'm pretty sure your PWMIC is just a few MOSFETs, in which case you can use the RAMsinks on them also. Just make sure to rig up a fan somehow to blow some air over it, because like I said in my guide RAMsinks can't do much without airflow.

Can't help you with 3DMark05 scores, but here's some before and after 3DMArk06 scores:

Stock (450/660) : 4695
OC (532/784 ): 5411
Volt Mod OC (685/885): 6559

yeh on the subject of RAM heatsinks... hope the ones which come with the vf900 are ok (hope Zalman do their usual good job on these!) coz i'm not getting any others! - they do look nice and blue :D
