The setup conversion

Right now, I love my computer setup, in my basement, with a big, L-shaped desk, big suede chair, Klipsch 5.1, two monitors, everything. It's comfy and I have lots of space.

But my first year of college is this fall. The dorms are very small. I definitely can't afford two LCDs, and I don't want to lug CRTs, so I'll be switching back to one monitor. I also don't want to lug the Klipsch back and forth, let alone finding space for it IN my dorm, so I will be switching purely to high-quality headphones for audio. And of course my big L-shaped desk will be reduced to a small desk big enough for what I need.

I'll get used to it, and of course the nice LCD and great headphones and all will still be a very nice setup, but it's sad losing my big desk, big chair, two monitors, and my Klipsch. Have any of you gone through a downgrade of your office setup like this before?

Also, this brings up another topic. Of course a desk to use in the dorms is provided, but when I'm home from school, instead of resuming use of my spacious desk and office down here, I will be keeping my setup pretty much the same as in college and putting it in my room. That way my dad and I will no longer share a system (we do now, but it's not a problem, but I have a feeling it would be then), and that way the area down here can stay purely his. So I will be needing a computer desk for my room, which is a very small one. The wall I will be putting it on is only six feet long, and the desk can't be any deeper than two feet! Any suggestions for desks from stores like Office Max, Staples, etc. that might fit this criteria, and maybe even have a few drawers in it, too?

i picked up a nice desk from walmart for $30. it's perfect and looks awesome (two kidney-bean shaped pieces of wood - one larger than the other, the larger one is the top surface and the smaller one is the bottom surface - joined together by metal rods). there's also a little keyboard tray that attaches to the bottom of the top surface.

it seriously looks nice and is about 2 feet wide by 1 foot deep on the larger surface. it fits perfectly for me, and was a huge space saver when i had a little room in the dorms.

edit: just goto walmart or target during the back-to-school season, lots of small space-saver desks available then.

they will provide you a desk. why dont you get another one when you get there? we had three people in one room...ther was no way i could fit extra furniture.

Read the post, this is for my bedroom at home.

So you guys think Wal-Mart instead of paying up the ass at OM or Staples? And the desks you mentioned, any of them 2 feet deep or less? That is important.

MeanMeosh, 1 foot deep? Are you serious??

Your refusal to bring you klipsch promedias shows you have your priorities all wrong.

My sound system in my dorm weights about 250 pounds and your whole set your fit inside my sub.

Yes, and what are the dimensions of your dorm? At what opportunities do you have time to blast it?

This is where we differ.

You can ALWAYS blast your speakers in a dorm. Trust me. 🙂

I'm afraid of a high nerd-per-square-foot count which would complain. Plus I'd want to do so much of it after 10 pm.

My room is 10'x12'

I have ample time to blast it on friday and saturday night when everyone else is too drunk to care.

There is also construction going on right outside my room, so I can blast it and not make much more noise than is already going on 🙂

Ours is "dry" too, but it doesn't stop anybody. I'm the only guy in my dorm old enough to legally have alcohol and I think I'm the only one who doesn't.

Hmm...I really don't know. I guess I'll see once I'm up there in the summer and get a look at the dorms again. But from what I remember, WAY to small to find space for the five speakers well.

You can even wall mount the klipsch satellites if you need to. How big do you think they are? 😛

If I can fit these and these and this and this in my room, I think you can handle some klipsch satellites.

Have any pics of your whole setup?

Yes, but that still makes quite the difference. My dorms are just as big but doubles, so the room has a bunk bed, a big armoir, and two desks.

I guess I'll see for sure when I'm back up there this summer, but I really doubt there will be space for the Klipsch. 🙁

hey archcommus, i just measured the desk and it's 2 feet by 1.5 feet footprint. not 1 foot as previously states. this is the top footprint, the bottom is smaller.
