I couldn't find this answer on eMachines website, so I was hoping someone here knew the answer to this. Is the Sempron 2800+ in the eMachines M5405 a Socket A chip or S754?

Thanks.

EDIT: Product page.

EDIT2: New question. Is the 512MB of RAM 1 chip or 2? Anyone know? I took a brief look here while on my lunch, but couldn't find anything. Thanks.

All Sempron's below 3100+ are Socket A, the mobile chips (if they are even different) should be the same way.

Well, I've been trying to do some research on the chipset used in the M5405, and found this: SiS M760. Listed on the product page for video is the SiS M760 Ultra, and it looks like this is a complete chipset solution, not just graphics. And according to SiS's product page, the chipset is made primarily for Athlon 64's, which would lead one to conclude it is atleast S754.

But, fbrdphreak is correct in that all Sempron's below 3100+ are Socket A, atleast Newegg confirms this for me. And another but, I found a link earlier of a personal review (maybe on epinions.com) where someone states it's a Socket 754, not a Socket A. How they know this, I'm not sure. You can't really trust any one person's word on the internet.

Can anyone shed a light on this?

Mobile Sempron is based on the x64 / socket 754 line:

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Proce...18_11600_11613,00.html

The 2800+ is clocked at 1.6ghz which would be equivalent to an 1800+ XP if it was based on Socket A. However, as AMDs specs show it's based on x64 architecture -- hence the higher rating.

The drawback to that emachine will be that battery life is only about 2.5hrs (maybe a little more if you disable wireless and dim the screen), and the integrated video won't do much for gaming.

Not a bad system if your not into games. Pretty zippy performance in general windows activities, even Adobe CS apps run smooth with it. Compared it to my m6805 and the performace difference isn't really that big for most productivity apps.

That's good to hear. I've already ordered one, so it should be here tomorrow. I am into gaming, but not on my laptop. If I want some games, I'll probably download some roms or something. This laptop will be mainly used at work and for some laptop web surfing on the recliner at nights.

Thanks for the info guys.

Not a problem. Just checked and it's out for delivery this morning, so I'll post an impressions thread in a couple of days once I run it through it's paces.
