Can anyone verify that this information is true? Looks legit to me. If so, I'm all about doing it.

The four major credit bureaus in the US. will be allowed, starting July 1, to release your credit info, mailing addresses, phone numbers..... to anyone who requests it. If you would like to 'opt out' of this release of info, you can call 1-888-567-8688. It only takes a couple of minutes to do, and you can take care of anyone else in the household while making only one call, you'll just need to know their social security number. Be sure to listen closely, the first opt out is only for two years, make sure you wait until they prompt you to press '3' on your keypad to opt out for good. Consumer's Right to Opt-Out: Consumers may opt-out of pre-approved offers of credit or insurance by calling one toll-free number: 1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688).

For more information see the following website: http://www.equifaxsecure.com/footer/footer_fcra.html

A lot of consumers are flattered by the fact that they find solicitations almost daily in their mailboxes. These solicitations do not mean you are approved for credit, or will receive a credit card. It only means that you do not have a credit card with that organization and they are attempting to get your business.

Credit Bureaus don't make a profit by storing and selling us our credit reports. The big bucks are made in selling your information to others. This is a huge industry, its how the big three are able to stay so profitable. The good news is that Federal Law regulates the sale of your information. By taking advantage of the Opt-Out program, you stop all sales of your private information for solicitation. I strongly urge all consumers to take advantage of this by having your name deleted from those mailing lists. I can assure you that none of that junk mail will be missed.

Call now, 888-5-OPTOUT or 1-888-567-8688.

I did it already. If you go to the Federal Trade Commission website, they have links from their site to the credit bureaus and have that same phone number posted online. BTW the July 1 deadline was for the 3rd quarter of the year 2001, so it won't go into affect until the 4th quarter if you sign up now.

Here is the Link to the actual page with the privacy information.
