Any thoughts on the game? I remember AOC was a pain in the ass to play and was pretty much barren at the start.

I prefer the Star Trek / Star Wars model where you buy unlocks. That way you can play enough to decide if you like it then pay, instead of needing to buy the game first.

Still, it's $30 at Amazon right now, vs. $52 for Guild Wars 2.

It goes way lower than that, I'm pretty sure there was just a sale for it on Origin earlier this week where it was down to like $11 or $8 or something.

This.

FTP means you don't have to spend a dime to play the basic package they allow you to.

Considering as of yesterday you had to buy then subscribe this is FTP..

This was an MMO with sub so that is now you dont have to pay.. that is FTP.

considering the software can be had for as low as 5 dollars.. quit bitching.

No, it's not FTP. FTP = no upfront cost & no sub cost (i.e. Runes of Magic, LOTRO, SWTOR, etc...). BTP = upfront cost & no sub cost (GW2, TSW).

No one's bitching, we just know our terms. Go educate yourself.

If you can download the client and then play it without registration codes from the box then I guess it can be considered FTP. There's a lot of games out there that allow you to purchase the client but you don't really need to.

Otherwise its not FTP because the "Free" part is untrue. Guild wars 2 isn't F2P either.

The idea that "buying" a game to play it (w/o a subscription) makes it FTP, explains alot about why we are where we are in the gaming world.

I even had 0 plans to play this game, because I find it unfun. I wasn't bitchign at all it costed money... just that people are miss using the FTP term.. I don't understand some peoples assumptions from other peoples comments.

by that logic every single game is FTP too... you just need to buy the software and that's it!

:D

It was on sale at one place for $5 and that was a few days/a week ago (Greenmangaming). It isn't on sale anywhere atm now and now that it they are going to be depending on the base game purchase for a lot of the revenue I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see big sales on it anymore.

no idea on player population

melee combat system is pretty meh. ranged combat system is not so bad if you don't mouse click skills and can kite.

I've read that the developers will be adding in functionality to mimic Tera's combat system, but I don't know if it's in TSW right now.

quest intros are on par with single player stuff and TSW's investigative quests are definitely different from standard MMO quests.

always felt that TSW would have been received better as a single player game than a MMO because it was definitely worth my $65 for the 2 months I played it before I got bored of TSW's end game system

No, it's not free to play. If you have to PAY then it isn't FREE.

What you are talking about is "pay once to play", or, as The Secret World themselves described it "pay once, play forever".

As a counter example, The Old Republic actually IS free to play, since you don't have to buy the game (although the F2P players are extremely restricted that it isn't even worth playing).

IMO,

Buy the game once and get access to the entire game (a la Guild Wars) > Get the game for free, play with real-world cash shops and micro-transactions (a la every other F2P game).

So is TSW the first one I'm guessing? Or are they doing both (upfront cost AND microtransactions)?

OK, I'm just going to start reporting your posts because you're a moron who doesn't understand basic comprehension and vocabulary and you're spreading false information.

Then this means. Final Fantasy 8 is Free to play.
This means Halo: combat evolved, is free to play.
This means Super Mario Brothers, is free to play.
This means Legend of Zelda: a link to the past, is free to play.
This means F-Zero, is free to play.
This means Pac-man, is free to play.
This means Skyrim, is free to play.

(See what i am getting at here) It isn't bitching, it is educating people the correct use of terms

FTP = Don't have to pay a dime to play teh basic package the developers allow. (And by this, this means if you DO NOT OWN it, it doesn't cost a dime.)
Subscriptionless (this game) = IS a game that has to be bought first, but after that only microtransactions or no other payments are required to play.
Subscription based = (World of warcraft, and so on) games that require a $X / Y time period payment to keep playing.
