Ugh...I had high hopes for this one due to it's theme but after a few hours of play I uninstalled it. the game is terrible, clunky interface, combat is boring as hell, and there's so much that is unexplained on how to do stuff.

Bummer I hoped this could break funcom's crap record. Although deep inside I knew it would suck I've decided that games need to:
Post decent quality in game video's that show real game play
Explicitly explain how you want combat, crafting, skills to work
Have good visuals (either real pretty or real quirky but something cool)
Something different with quests
When they showed off the zombie encounter a few months ago it looked like a reskinned WoW.
Bummer

Hmm I just got a key for this and downloaded the client. Guess I can give it a try this Friday but doesn't sound very promising from what I've heard so far.

also, a few hours.....

k

Unless you are a fanboy to a game that is coming out, first impressions are very important and a few hours is more than enough time to have a solid first impression of the game. If a developer can't create a game that pulls the player in within the first couple of hours and want them playing more, then they didn't do a very good job.

This is a beta right?

Not familiar with this game at all, but Funcom isn't all bad, they picked up Bloodline Champions to publish at least :D

also in beta, played more than few hours, dont agree, but cant list reason as of NDA.
I would ask, what MMORPG has good combat right now? Tera has mixed it up by basicly making it a more action type of combat (I like tera's combat) its very busy and keeps you moving. Funcom has tried some interesting ideas and tend to stray from the path all the others stick to like its required.. Not always to great ends i will admit.. but AoC did add some elements that where interesting. Right now ALL MMORPG's have abilitys to use and cool downs, with lock on targeting.. there is nothing new. You hate one you hate um all. I wont say SW is or isnt this way.. again NDA.. But I must admit it seems pretty harsh for a few hours. and this is over a month away, if you have been in several MMORPG beta's you know alot can change and probely will in that month.. again, not always.. but quite often.

Im not syaing your wrong (or right).. as you dont like it. Im just sying I disagree.. it does have some rough spots ( do agree) as for unexplained.. not sure what there is on that, i havent found any issues with doing anything yet, pretty much works as i expected. But I have only tried 3 characters, maybe I havent hit what you are.

NDA- so not sure how you can say really anything.. I found the locations to be interesting as they dont look like any i have seen before. Of course once can say,, group of fantasy builds is no differnt then group of future or modern day buildings .. The locations and such worked for me.. and again I have complaints.. one major one.. but .. eh... free month of gameplay and the chance to track a few bugs.. Im in..

Yah so? A beta IS the final product for majority of games. Beta for MMO are stress testing basically and weed out the other bugs.

What do you mean "yah so?"? This software is not finished nor polished. And Betas are not simply stress testing or bug testing. They roll out new content as well. A beta isnt designed to woo somebody into buying the product. They serve a technical requirement for the end product. Basing an opinion on a beta is silly.

You are talking about the old school way of doing betas years ago. Now anyone and grandma can get into betas, its not a "exclusive" club anymore. I actually have a beta email filter because i sign up for lots of them that seem interesting and pick and choose based on time/interest anymore.

I've yet to find a beta that if you don't like the beta the game is released any different.

thats all i need, got a problem with that?

as i've said before, i'm not going to force myself to play a game i'm not enjoying. what's the point? you'd have to be stupid to do that.

nah, I don't disagree with that. Games should have a fun and quick hook to keep you engaged early on. Especially if you haven't paid, it's easy enough to simply not care and dump it.

but it does reinforce my general thought on the "MMO's never do anything new! / I want my MMO to be just like that MMO!" internal conflict that most critics struggle with, even though they don't know it.

If a game tries something drastically new, of course it will be confusing from the get-go. Especially in a beta, which likely has no tutorial/learning curve. Either people want something that they expect and they have played before, and so can get hooked quickly, or they want something new...and get frustrated when it isn't the same?

I haven't played it, of course, so I wonder if it's just bugs and clunky beta-ness, plus a complete lack of tutorial? Or is it really just a WoW clone with a different skin that simply doesn't work?

In that token, I can see a lot of people dumping GW2 early on if they only give it ~2 hours, if it starts off anything like the Beta started. it is preposterously different from every other MMO--there are no dedicated roles like everyone expects (you are squishy--fact: YOU ARE SQUISHY! haha), and at beta, you're just tossed into the fray with no leading or any kind of hint as to how this thing works. So, despite being told this over and over by every reviewer and those who have played it, anyone with MMO experience will invariably assume that they are either a tank or DPS or whatever, and end up being frustrated for several levels until they learn that this is simply not how the game works.

And...it really takes about 6 or 8 hours to "get it." Maybe longer. Hopefully, fixed on general release (needs tutorial plus some serious difficulty balance...which might be fixed with tutorial. learning how not to die makes the game much more fun, you see. ;)).

GW2 release = 25gb

GW2 beta client = 14gb

...I see release being noticeably different.

Just saying.

(now, that could be that those 10gb are videos and races that are currently locked, but there are balancing issues that ANet will likely address, as they tend to be quite responsive to the community).

That being said, the game feels "mostly" complete to me. some bugs and features that aren't yet available that certainly will be (direct trades, choosing server instances to stay with your party, etc)

Man, poor Funcom. I remember people talking about how awesome Anarchy Online was at higher levels. I tried it again for free a while back and hot damn that game is crusty (didn't age well).

I'm in on the weekend beta so I won't play until tomorrow. It seems like a fun setting but it's all in the execution.

Yeah, the setting and story behind is awesome. the game play execution is what i didn't like.

As for the NDA, what are they going to do, ban me from the beta that I'm not longer playing? I don't get the NDA's on betas that eveyone can get into. Hell, all you have to do is sign up for their facebook version of the game to get guarranteed

I've played in many betas and have yet to see one that was really different than the "finished" game, except maybe a little polishing here and there.
Seriously, the first few months after launch for most games is an extended beta test these days as it is.
