The Science of Trump Voter Hate

Live science published this article, which I think accurately describes the scientific underpinnings and consequences of Trump voters' hatred of Muslims and Mexican immigrants. Here is the paragraph that stood out to me:

"If we use rhetoric and enact policies that make Muslims feel dehumanized, this may lead them to support exactly the types of aggression that reinforce the perception that they are 'less civilized' than 'us,'" Bruneau said in a statement. "In this way, dehumanization can become self-fulfilling in the minds of the dehumanizers and justify their aggression."

I have stated this before, but I think it needs to be stated again: This, the paragraph above, is the whole point! By dehumanizing and denigrating Muslims and Mexican immigrants, Trump is stoking the flames of future violent resistance. He want them to fight back, so he can justify further abuses of power. The question is, will this work? Can he convince 35% of the population (or more) to be so afraid and angry at Muslims that they will approve of any authoritarian measures he enacts, and can he use that hatred to increase that percentage? I hope not, but I am concerned that this article basically says that this strategy has scientific underpinnings, and is not as foolish as it would appear.

Again, why can't there be a fair portrayal of what is actually happening. So Trump said we should hate Muslims and Mexican Immigrants? Vast majority of people are not against Muslims or people wishing to immigrate to the US in a legal manner. Please show proof that is contrary to this.

Democrats/Progressives are the ones that have been working for decades to position and label people into groups and then incite violence and resentment among the different groups. Then the Democrats/Progressives can then use this situation to brainwash people into believing that only a strong central government can save us and bring peace because we are too stupid to live our life without their divine intervention. Only the groups that pledge loyalty and forfeit their constitutional rights will get the gifts of the new central government and the rest will be stereotyped, bullied, harassed, ostracized, and beaten until they conform and give up their rights.

While not conclusive proof the uptick in violence against Muslims, Jews and "Muslim looking people" since Jan is solid evidence. I really don't think this is a coincidence. I've seen clips of middle school kids taunting Hispanic kids with "build the wall chants" I don't think they pulled it out of thin air.

Fake news

How is this fake news? Because you don't like the results of the study? There is documentation and citation in the article.... please explain how this is "fake news".

It is a political article with the dressings of science. The academy is a very political place. You could easily design a counter-study on how "deplorable" stereotypes affect the decisions of corporations.

Fake science then? In any case, fake, and frankly your pedantry is starting to get in the way of any meaningful exchange, fivr.

I thought for a second it was going to be the science behind the hate of Trump voters. Instead it was an article about the hate of Trump voters. Kind of disappointed that the educated elite of this country are not able to be introspective.

Mexican immigrants who said they felt dehumanized by Trump were also more likely to dehumanize Trump and support anti-Trump initiatives, such as boycotting his businesses, compared with those who did not feel dehumanized by Trump, the researchers found. In addition, those individuals who felt dehumanized by Trump were more likely to "want to see him personally suffer, and endorse hostile actions such as spitting in his face," according to the study. [6 Politicians Who Got the Science Wrong]

Furthermore, Muslims who said they felt dehumanized by non-Muslim Americans were more likely to support violent approaches to supporting civil rights for Muslims in the U.S. compared with supporting nonviolent approaches, the researchers found.

Interesting the contrast between responses/reactions to this so-called "dehumanization."

Mexicans would go so far as spitting in Trump's face or boycotting his business, yet muslims (predictably) support violence. I know some regressive will likely point out that spitting in someone's face is a form of violence, completely missing the point. Oh liberals, never change.

If not "hating" illegal immigrants requires me to accept them breaking immigration law otherwise I'm "dehumanizing" then so be it. I guess I "hate" them the same way progressives then "hate" the rich and dehumanize them for being "greedy" or "causing the 2009 financial crisis."

So, hating on people won't cause them to hate you back?

You mean like labelling everyone who disagrees with you a deplorable? Never seen such hatred in the history of humanity (with a few possible exceptions, depending on how you analyze motive and intent) as that directed towards conservatives presently.

Everyone wasn't called a deplorable. Read the actual quote in full.

Trumpsters seem to wear that as a badge of honor & act accordingly. His election was an expression of spite more than anything else.

Read the way you phrased your question. Lol. You come in and pretend you are level headed person and then start dropping dumb shit.

She said "you can put half of trump's supporters in what i call the basket of deplorables." Are you suggesting that there is only one Trump supporter? That would make sense, I guess, since a half-person isn't a single person.

This is interesting. I was expecting the usual, boring, natural language defense, but you outdid yourself. Unfortunately for you, it's not true. Regressives living in a bubble...

There are also plenty of cases where people made up fake hate crimes since the election. A homeless guy was going around slashing bike tires and carving swastikas into random cars.

Whats interesting is you think she called everyone a deplorable. Talk about a bubble.

"I know there are only 60 days left to make our case -- and don't get complacent, don't see the latest outrageous, offensive, inappropriate comment and think, well, he's done this time. We are living in a volatile political environment. You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic -- you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people -- now 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric. Now, some of those folks -- they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America."

"But the other basket -- and I know this because I see friends from all over America here -- I see friends from Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Texas -- as well as, you know, New York and California -- but that other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they're just desperate for change. It doesn't really even matter where it comes from. They don't buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won't wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they're in a dead-end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well."

Nah, I wasn't specifically referring to Clinton. After all, she doesn't read these forums. Many who do, however, post here have doubled down on that remark and insist it applies to anyone who voted for trump. Maybe you're one of them.

Even if just limited to hillary, claiming all of them were called deplorables is a lot closer to the truth than claiming none of them were, as you did.

That Clinton even said that just goes to show how wrongheaded she is. Bill would never say anything like that. He is way smarter and more talented than she is.

Show me where I claimed non of them were? I agree with her. Half of the Republican Party are deplorable.
