Shortcut, I agree that they need to re-examine that policy if it's in place, however, your use of foul language to describe volutneer workers is immature, childish and offensive to those who actually volunteer at these organizations. You say it wasn't your intent to badmouth all of us, but that's just what you did, in quite a vulgar manner.

Uhh, calm down buddy.

Johnjohn320...you may be a voluteer for SA, but with that crappy attitude you carry....which BTW, just reinforces what ppl here are saying that the SA and the people that work for them seem to think they are holier than thou, since you DO represent them.....I will make sure when I have stuff to donate I will

A) give it to goodwill
B) give it to the animal shelter/some organization
C) give it to a friend/neighbor
D) Yard sale it (buy beer with the proceeds)
E) trash it
F) chrush it, then trash it

i think its probably correct that they sell stuff in the store and use the profit to help the needy, therefore im sure they screen donations in order to maximize income.

it would not be prudent to have donations sit around and not sell.

im sure they have seen that matching sets sell faster and for higher prices.

In any case, it was rude of the person to leave Mr. Shortcut in the dark as to WHY they won't take it.

The above reason (maximizing profits) is an acceptable one, but it would be better if their policy was to just take anything and sell the stuff that isn't a matching set so cheap that it can't be refused. Certainly pushing more low-cost product can have as much effect as pushing a better high-priced product.

Again, though, it was rude of them to not explain this. They at least owed that because Shortcut was willing to donate.

Wow, I thought that place was just a local thrift store.

We have one right down the street.

Hey asshole, how bout you not call people who do good work "bastards." Yeah, they should've taken the set. Maybe they have an overabundance of beds right now (more than they could possibly give away?) Ever think of that?

In case you hadn't guessed, I do a lot of work for the Salvation Army. They're good people. They work hard for those less fortunate. A lot more than just trying to donate stuff, which you seem to feel all self-absorbed over (look at me! i'm a good person, but these bastards who've dedicated their lives to helping the homeless won't take it! waaaah!).

Maybe you didn't mean it this way, I'm sorry I'm getting snappy. But you took something and blown it way out of proportion, and using some pretty strong words to describe good people. All I'm saying is there's probably another reason, and if not, oh well, donate the bed somewhere else and get off your soapbox!

Wow, who put the stick up your butt today?

Agreed.

JohnJohn, you're being uncharacteristically vehement. Even personal attacks on your character have not provoked an outburst of this nature to my recollection.

Relax kiddo.

Eh, yeah, sorry. It's been a long day. A long week. A long everything. The sunburn on my back isn't helping. ;) So I'm a bit short today, and I apologize.

I still stand by my point though. I have to say I find it a little ironic that everyone's going "whoa, calm down johnjohn." Uh...original post:

I had some furniture I wanted to donate. Since the Salvation Army can pickup donations, I decided to call them up to schedule a pickup. To my surprise, it turns out these bastards are pretty picky:

Salvation Army: What would you like to donate?
Me: Bed, drawers, tables, clothes, etc.
SA: Are the furniture items from a matching set?
Me: (thinking WTF?) The items were bought separately.
SA: I'm sorry, we only accept furniture if they're from a matching set.

WTF? I assumed the SA provided furniture and clothing to those who are less fortunate. It seems, though, the SA primarily caters to those who really care that their bed matches their dresser.

Fscking morons - they could've supplied a bed to someone who needed one...guess they'll have to keep looking for a matching set for Chip, Bunny, and Sport.

Guess the SA won't be needing my spare change come this holiday season. Asshats.

Hmm. I dont think I'm the only one overreacting here today. Be that as it may, sorry I snapped like that. I'm gonna go bathe in some aloe vera. Whine Whine Whine Bitch Bitch Bitch ok I'm done.

Sure thing. [tips hat]

You're reaffirming my belief that you never have anything terribly insightful or interesting to say.

Thanks for all your suggestions on alternative charities to donate to! I'll give GW and DI a call, and maybe post flyers around the local universities.

I think someone will get good use from this furniture, even if they're not a matching set. :D

Lol - got the same experience from them...

Wanted to donate some miscellanous stuff like lamp shades - brand new office supplies - "Sorry we don't accept them" - i had to run all around town to see who else to donate to...

IF anyone is located in Ann Arbor, MI, or if you are located near a Recycle/Re-use store - go for it - they accept nearly everything :D

A few years back the hotel my dad manages was throwing out some furniture, stuff was in great condition, yet salvation army refused to take it because it was just chairs and nightstands and the rest of the set wasnt there. I thought that was bs, there was 25 good chairs and 25 good nightstands that ended up going in the dumpster...bleh
