The salaries they offer for the IT positions on craislist are laughable

Bobberfett - why the hell didn't they just get SONET or a DS3? At 12 T1s it's usually cheaper.

One word: Contracts

My predecessors set up a mess of contracts with three separate providers. Termination would have been more expensive in the long run. I've been slowly consolidating those as contracts have expired.

Tell me about it. I applied for a job and I have MCSA and VCP 4 and they replied back to me saying I am a good candidate for 13-16 hr lol

I'd say that's about right.

No one gives a shit about certs anymore if you don't have experience. Exams can open the door, but they don't guarantee a job and they sure as hell won't determine your salary. Experience and demonstrated real world ability do that.

However, without certain certs your resume will never be reviewed unless you know someone to personally get it pushed to the proper person.

Here's another one that's lowballing:

Desirable Knowledge:
- experience with web based control panels (Cpanel/WHM , Plesk)
- experience with various hosting applications/environments (webhosting, media streaming, game servers, etc)

Primary responsibilities
- manning our 24x7 helpdesk
- processing support tickets from our customers
- answering emails, phones and chat
- server assembly
- OS & control panel installs
- network monitoring

This is graveyard shift position

Starting wage is $12/HR 😱

I have 6 years experience on top of that

I have been making more than the offer for the last 3 years without the certs lol

Hahaha! Shit, may as well just become a garbage collector and get paid the same with far less stress.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Only somebody that doesn't understand the industry would say something like that. IT is only getting increasingly more complex. The virtualization push and the transformation of how data centers and applications, our very means of conducting business and communication, work is under radical change and the people that know how to do it properly are few and far between. And they're going to make out like bandits.

I'm trying to help you guys here.

Funny how 10 years ago, the big fad was all about "distributed computing, moving away from the mainframe type of infrastructure. Now, it's all about consolidation & virtualization, like it's coming full circle.

Yeah. Now it's distributed consolidation. The mainframe guys are still laughing. They've had this shit for decades. It's not new.

The whole distribute/consolidate thing goes in circles.

1. Start off with central big crap
2. Use dumb terminals
3. Start making the dumb terminals smarter and faster until they become a PC again
4. Use PC/Server model for a while
5. Start consolidation again
6. Rinse/Repeat

I think many of you are out of touch with the reality of this economy. Post a job for $8-10/hr and you are bound to get tons of resumes even from Ph.D's and ex-SVP types.

Times are tough.

It works in reverse too, employers know chances are there is some EE or Comp Sci dude on his last unemployment check and finally sucking it up that he isn't going to find another $75/hr gig yet alone a $20/hr one.

Personally I feel company's that do this should be boycotted. IMHO it's predatory.

Agreed. That's how my former boss operated. Because times were tough he thought it was a good idea to low ball candidates. I told him that if someone accepts a low offer, we aren't hiring them -- we're renting them. They're just there to collect a check and will continue to look for a new job the entire time. Then in 3, 6, 9 months, etc. we'll be looking for someone to replace them.

I took a look locally... most of the software jobs listed here start at $42/hr. Sounds pretty damn reasonable to me.

So called "IT professionals" are a dime a dozen.

fixed.

Good, well qualified IT professionals are like good, honest auto mechanics. If/when you find one you hold on and you don't let go.

Problem is, most hiring managers have no idea how to assess the qualifications, expertise, or depth of knowledge possessed by IT job candidates in my experience. Even if you showed them a portfolio of your work they wouldn't be knowledgeable enough to judge it's quality.
Like an auto mechanic who does a good job, a good IT solution from a qualified IT professional might cost you more up front but your problem will be solved right the first time and will save you considerable time and money in the longer run. But unfortunately our mentality has switched in this country from being quality minded and long term thinking to immediate gratification and myopia. We're so used to cheap goods from overseas and that mentality is spilling over into the IT industry as well. Personally, I'd rather pay $1000 for a quality product that will last me 5 years than pay $300-$400 for one from China (or maybe India since we are talking about IT here) that I'll have to replace every year.

Not enough people buy quality products so they stopped making them. You can buy the piece of Chinese garbage for cheap or you can pay more money for the same Chinese garbage with a formerly solid brand name attached to it and a couple extra features that will break.
