The "safety of those on death row"

Just thinking about what I saw on the Today Show today about Scott Peterson's arrival on Death Row. They talked a lot about how the measures taken to "protect him," from other prisoners or what have you (the bullet proof vest they put him in for the transfer, for example). Anyone else find this just a tiny bit ironic? It's kind of like the classic "why do they sterilize the needle used for lethal injection" question.

Because he has the right to appeal right up until the MOMENT he's killed by the state. They must ensure his survival until that time.

Bah, who cares if someone offs him in prison? Certainly not me.

As blood thirsty as the American general populace is, it is imporatant to remember that there is a such thing as procedural due process. Peterson has some pretty fertile appellate ground, and the prison system owes him a duty to at least try, if not ensure, that he be safe until put to death legally by the state of California.

He will be safer on death row than he would be in the general prison population. Plus it seems weird that my unborn son will probably be in college before he is actually executed.

I highly doubt he will ever be executed, unless Arnold goes on a rampage.

Yeah, because certainly NOBODY has been wrongly convicted of a crime.

Actually, sentencing Peterson to life would save a lot of money. The death penalty, after factoring in legal costs, is far too costly for the negligible deterrent value that it allegedly has.

He is still entitles to procedural due process. Regardless of actual innocence or guilt.

Yeah, California has only executed a 11 people in the 30 years since they brought back the death penalty. They've got 639 sitting on death row now so it'll be a long while before they get to Peterson. He'll likely die of old age first.

Oh, I fully agree. The death penalty really should be abolished. It doesn't serve as a deterrent and it's a very expensive situation for the state.

I would much rather see Peterson do life, and I'd like to see the prison system bring back the concept of hard labor.

That or go ahead and realize John Carpenter's vision of using Manhatten Island as a giant jell cell. ;)

I'm willing to take that chance with this one. :D

Yeah, that!

I think that San Quentin indeed has its safety issues, but I think that much of what we have seen on TV was provided solely for TV viewing. The media loves sensationalism, and that is exactly what the guards provided the media. I think that events were exaggerated to make it sound extremely dangerous in SQ.

In my opinion, Scott Peterson will fare well and even much better than if he had been in contact with the general prison population. I say that because he is clearly an introvert and processes his thoughts internally. Solitude actually would work fine for him.

I'm still trying to figure out how california has a death penalty. I always thought they were largely liberal. Guess not.
