Shaq is a smart man---he's basically setting up a rivalry and stirring up the media for next season which will peak interest and generally bring more enthusiasm/people watching the games. He's being a big proponent of his employer, the NBA. what's good for the NBA is good for him in this sense.

It's all about the Benjamins.
