Good food for thought (if you have an hour to spare :p) but it covers the topic quite well and clearly outlines the pros and cons of each platform

I've changed my vote to "Something Else," since the 8700K is not available to me. If I had to build now, it would probably have to be X299.

How don't I know what I am talking about? And when did I say I was an expert? I don't know what I'm talking about because my gaming priorities are different than yours?

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD where are the moderators? Literally not one post by this member was on topic. I had to weed through 10+ posts trying to explain IPC to no avail and then we get this irrelevant drivel about his personal gaming setup for another round of back and forth.

Please delete my post while you're at it.

I've changed my vote to "Something Else," since the 8700K is not available to me. If I had to build now, it would probably have to be X299.

X399 is much better choice, you can simply use game mode for gaming and everything else for CPU. Either way 6 fastest cores is best choice for gaming, unless you are streaming BF1 (or any other CPU intensive game) while gaming R7 could be better choice than i7 8700K, but even i7 8700K should kill it. Specially, if you are going to OC to around 5GHz.

techspot did test i7 8700K 4,3GHz and it eats quite some power. Looks like i7 8700 will need more than good board to maintain 4,3GHz (or cheap fan over VRMs;)).

But looks like you can get better P/W with OC.
Probably doesn't guarantee perfect stability, but no one will argue with it, if it achieves better clock and lower power and runs corona.

I don't agree that X299 is universally a better choice. The motherboards are more expensive, and the cache structure of the HEDT chips seems oriented towards server instead of desktop/gaming. The 8700K would be the best way (for me) to have a 5GHz hexacore on my desktop, IF I could get one.

Yeah, until AMD hit those frequencies or they do IPC improvements, Intel is still best choice for enthusiast.

Hopefully they do something with pinnacle ridge, like 10% clock boost and lower DRAM latency. To get 6C/12 4,4GHz for 200-225$ would be insane with low DRAM latencies (50-60ns).
