oh, come on apoppin, if amd could possibly bring r700 to us in april (and steal nvidia's bullshit "next gen" card's thunder) they you know they would do it. AMD has already released r600 and rv670 in the past 10 months, they're really cranking right now to stay up with nvidia, but I'll be very impressed if we see r700/rv770 by june.

edit: of course, if we really do get to see 3850's for less than $100 anytime soon, I might try for the poor man's xfire solution that you used...

well, lets cut to the chase, bry

i believe there is a lot of intentional misdirection this time ;)

... here's my 'take' ... IF these postings are indeed accurate, then r700 is a LOT closer than June ... May ... with an announcement in April
-you never get these kinds of leaks until 8-10 weeks before launch
Well, apparently it has taped out, along with G100. ATI needs R700 far more urgently than nVidia needs G100 at this point.

I'd say it's very well possible that we'll see this card around May/June. ATI has historically released cards around that time of year (reasons unknown).

that was just because they always aimed for September ... and were generally pretty happy with the next May :p
:D

... anyway ... Canadian Pot usage aside, it's *all* AMD now ... they are cracking the whip now
... but 'ASAP' is what makes sense for AMD Graphics right now ... a timely and successful launch with r700 would do much for them ;)

Looks to be another mid ranger that is easy to produce and a dual set up can sort of compete. Makes sense as development must be cheaper with less risk of a total screw up. And almost anything these days can play an xbox port.

I think AMD's leaking info on purpose, just to give NVIDIA a run for its money.

Like what Apocalypse said, I can only wait till the summer to find out what happens to the future of video cards. Now that I can't get the 8800GT that I mentioned a few weeks back, I might as well look towards the future and devise a plan on how I should get the best bang for buck GPU that has yet to been released!

Edit: If the leaked info is realistic. Then NVIDIA will be in BIG trouble. Deja vu anyone?: ;)

Even if those specs are true... does it really say much about the card's performance?

I remember hearing about the HD 2900 XT 320 shaders... and then the GDDR4 memory, I thought NV was really in for trouble... and we all know how that turned out to be ;p

AMD is doing pretty bad and it seems they are taking refugee on dual-chip cards now... I don't think they can top NV's crown for the fastest single-chip just yet... after all NV is coming up with the GT200.

And two, I really like the dynamic power part. 10W in idle is really impressive, if ATi designs proper cooler, it might mean the card could be cooled passively in idle and only turn on fan when you game. That would be really nice.

they could be cooled passively right now at idle if they so chose. My card idles at 38-39c currently with fan on 23%. Even with it clocked at 877/2538 it takes a lot to get it over 60c or 60% fan.

Core frequencies are a bit optimistic. Anyways, I expect 4870 to perform about as well as an 8800 Ultra, but at a $300 price point. A single 4870 will be no match for a GT200, but 4870x2 vs GT200 should be very interesting.

How are they more powerful?
He probably means from a FLOPs metric. Of course in practice they?re slower because they require much more optimal code than nVidia?s.

Finally moving away from that awful 16tmu. Only thing it needs is memory bandwidth to crush the new 9800gt or whatever.
