If these postings are accurate, Nvidia has a lot to fear. If a SLI 9600GT solution is beating their own top end 9800GTX, things will get interesting. Crossfire is much better and more flexible then SLI and now ATI will be designing to their advantage.

Everything is still rumor at this point, but it's still fun to speculate while holding a 7900GT.
 
my far fetched guess is when this drops, we are going to see a 1024/2048mb 512bit 48ROP 256SP beast drop 2 days before from the other camp and that it'll either be 65,55, or 45nm and codenamed either g92, g90, g100, or gt200.

don't know if they'll call it a geforce 9900, 9800 ultra, geforce 10K, or Geforce We'reAssholes 5000
 
oh, come on apoppin, if amd could possibly bring r700 to us in april (and steal nvidia's bullshit "next gen" card's thunder) they you know they would do it. AMD has already released r600 and rv670 in the past 10 months, they're really cranking right now to stay up with nvidia, but I'll be very impressed if we see r700/rv770 by june.

edit: of course, if we really do get to see 3850's for less than $100 anytime soon, I might try for the poor man's xfire solution that you used...

... here's my 'take' ... IF these postings are indeed accurate, then r700 is a LOT closer than June ... May ... with an announcement in April
-you never get these kinds of leaks until 8-10 weeks before launch
 
only time will tell. It would be kind of nice if amd could have a very limited r700/rv770 release to coincide with the upcoming 9-series releases to give nvidia some payback for 8800gt, I just don't think they'll be there yet by april.

And if those numbers about idle consumption are correct, I will trade my 8800 GT for one of these. I am gaming for something like an hour a day out of 13-14 hours, and this will come in handy.

I wonder if current power supply won't have problems with jumping from 100 Watts to something like 350-500W.

After the HD 2000 Series, I gave the AMD the edge but there you have it...

And people said that buying ATI was the worst thing AMD could have done. Their ATI cards are their best products right now.

As much as I want the 4k series to be released, I also want to up upgrade my video card now, which means 3870X2 in March. I'm not particularly willing to wait until June for the initial R700 launches, later for the 4870X2 cards. Next mobo I buy though will likely have Crossfire support.

Depending on how Nvidia's negociations with Intel over designing chipsets for Nehalem, it could also boast SLI support.
 
It would be sweet if Crossfire X was confirmed to work between the 3XXX and 4XXX gens. I'd not hestiate to pull the trigger on a 3870 knowing I can keep it's performance in conjunction with a 4870 for a >$200 upgrade.

Really would increase card sales if people could use prev gen cards in a multi-GPU config. Instead of blowing $200 and then scrapping the card several months later for a 50% performance increase, we could retain the power of the still powerful old card.

Would also make extra ram on these cards more useful because of the way dual GPUs scale with one another. DDR3 and 4 is getting cheaper and 2 gigs on each vid card will start to make sense pretty soon. Because of how CF/SLI scales near 100% for the second card and 60% for the third, a 3 card ultimate solution with 2 gigs per card would really rock.
 
I like what I see so far, for two reasons. First reason is the next 48xx cards look good on specs, which might finally mean some real competition between ATI/nVidia. And two, I really like the dynamic power part. 10W in idle is really impressive, if ATi designs proper cooler, it might mean the card could be cooled passively in idle and only turn on fan when you game. That would be really nice.
 
no tellin till someone benches r700. then we'll know for sure. Like cookie monster says, atis cards are more powerful, ever since the 2900xt. They just aren't implementing technologies/ writing drivers as well as nvidia is. I sure hope they get their act together, cuz if there ever was a time to pounce, its next month for sure.
 
I kinda feel ATI will win this one, after reading various comments posted about the new upcoming nvidia 9xxx series, many don't seem as delighted, also looking at the specs, I have a hunch ATI will WIN. 😛

Think about this:
ATI pricing < Nvidia pricing i.e ATI prices better and cheaper than nVidia (this is a significant factor in winning customers, bang for the buck scenario)
Upcomin ATI 4xxx series is boasting some incredible specs, given the 3870x2 itself is an acheivement, plus the thought of Dual Gpus in further action is something to be looked into (something radical).
If 3 way crossfire or 4 way crossfire boards are relased for intel chipsets, ATI wins price to performance (assuming the needed drivers are out for this setup to work)


ATI's main competition and issues to deal with ATM: 1)Better performance in Crysis needed 2)Better performance in games such as COD4 needed 3)Better driver support needed

If all this is acheived, ATI wins. AMD is smart, i have a feeling ATI under AMD will perform superior to nvidia, PS- ESA from nvidia seems like too much of a waste of time 😛

The future of videcards and high res gaming will certainly unfold in 2008! 🙂

How are they more powerful? Since the shaders are required to handle AA with R6XX, I'd say they are far less powerful. AA should never have been done by the shaders. If R700 fixes that major flaw, then I'd say ATI has a bright future. AA really should become a standard feature IMO.

It's obvious nvidia is performing better. Like you said, I hope the R700/rv770 fixes this problem as well. They really need to do something to revise their design/arch.
 
So long as the new 4 series is within 10% of nv's top end offerings it's a win -- with the current situation of only 780i and Skulltrail being able to do SLI + 45nm anyone considering a multi-gpu solution with a high end CPU is locked into ATI.

If the rumors are true and the R700 outperforms slightly rehashed 2 year old technology then there's going to be a *LOT* of 8800GTs out there for sale used. And not much market since very few will be able to multi-GPU them. 8800GT, the new low end!

This could be (finally!) the break AMD's been needing. Not much of a financial benefit, but the mindshare gain will be huge!
