I hated it, i thought it was horrible. It was way too slow, and I really didn't think wasn't funny at all. I was tempted to turn it off at many points. And, I really liked Rushmore, but Royal Tenenbaums just did not appeal to me.

Royal: I want to make this family love me. How much money you got?

Royal: Lets shag ass.

Pagoda stabs Royal
Royal: That's the last time you put a knife in me! Y'hear me?

Richie: Did you say you were on Mescaline?
Eli: I did indeed. Very much so.

Young Margot: Are you getting a divorce?
Royal: Well, it doesn't really look good.
Young Margot: Is it our fault?
Royal: Well, we had to make sacrifices in order to have children but no.

Royal: I'm very sorry for your loss. Your mother was a terribly attractive woman.

Haha. I dunno, maybe you gotta have some weird sense of humor to enjoy it, or be in the right frame of mind. I laughed quite a bit.

I really enjoyed it. I like movies with over the top characters and this movie was full of them. Great soundtrack too.

My I was "spoiled by the hype" but when I finally got around to seeing this film, I wasn't very impressed.

Cinematographically, if that's even a word, I thought it was amazing. I got the impression that every shade of color was hand picked, and it was filmed from neat camera angles. I really liked "watching it" just to see how things were filmed.

For the movie itself, I thought the actors all did a bang-up job, it had some good laughs, but at the end of the movie I felt like I would have gotten more satisfaction out of schooling my parents for the umpteenth time in Trivial Pursuit. It didn't leave me with any sort of "message" except for it's very strained and rather trite message about family bonding and reconciliation. It definitely didn't leave me in the fascinated, contemplated mood that I continue to be left in after watching Being John Malkevich, Pi, or Cube.

It's worth a rent, especially if you like black comedy, but I really think the hype is all just b/c of Rushmore.

The Mr. Cranky review that Murpheeee posted is exactly what I would have written about the movie, had i actually taken the time to do so. i found myself trying to find some obviously "funny and quirky" moments actually funny and quirky, but i just couldn't. I felt the characters were so distanced from the audience, that there was hardly any way to enjoy the movie without actively forcing yourself to enjoy it. though intelligence my be required to understand the subtleties of the movie, i think a certain mind-set is required to find it entertaining.
