My I was "spoiled by the hype" but when I finally got around to seeing this film, I wasn't very impressed.
Cinematographically, if that's even a word, I thought it was amazing. I got the impression that every shade of color was hand picked, and it was filmed from neat camera angles. I really liked "watching it" just to see how things were filmed.
For the movie itself, I thought the actors all did a bang-up job, it had some good laughs, but at the end of the movie I felt like I would have gotten more satisfaction out of schooling my parents for the umpteenth time in Trivial Pursuit. It didn't leave me with any sort of "message" except for it's very strained and rather trite message about family bonding and reconciliation. It definitely didn't leave me in the fascinated, contemplated mood that I continue to be left in after watching Being John Malkevich, Pi, or Cube.
It's worth a rent, especially if you like black comedy, but I really think the hype is all just b/c of Rushmore.
