So true. Conservatives today are not social conservatives like Edmund Burke or economic conservatives like Adam Smith but instead do whatever is necessary to preserve the mansions on the hills from the rabble of the slums below.

Not as much now as there used to be like the orange groves, but there are major defense industry companies in OC (tends to make it conservative). My company's headquarters's is in Anaheim. Used to know throughout most of the year (changes a little during Christmas season) that it was 9:36pm by the start of the first firework going off at Disneyland. During baseball season when the Angels had a home game on Friday, I had a real nice view of their fireworks show.
I have a love/hate relationship with that area. Love the weather, but too many people in one place.
You're right though, seems the nicer places were up in the hills like Anaheim Hills. It's probably 80 percent Mexican in the flats.

That's also where I first learned that Mexicans and blacks are not particularly fond of each other. I think there was only about a 6 per cent black population in OC at the time I lived down there. OC must be at least 50 per cent hispanic on the other hand.

I wish the per cent tag would work right so I wouldn't have to type it out.

That's what I was doing when I was down in Anaheim, tagging electronic tech manuals in SGML. UGH!

mustangs cost the same in both states.

Actually if you check out dealerships all over the country people tend to pay a little more for the exact same car in rich cities vs. poor cities.

Granted most of the rich folks choose to move up a whole class in their auto choices so its not like you notice it.

Leave it to...oh hell.
You totally didn't get it. Rich people living in high tax states!

No he did get it, and addressed the point accurately.

I have lived in two of those states, my wife and I lived in DC together and she grew up in a third on that list...

these states are expensive to live in, their local governments cannot manage funds, and tax hikes and service reduction are always on the table...

If you make 200K/year per household in a state like MA, DC, or nicer parts of CT you aren't "rich"

And as someone above said, Fairfield county in CT most likely skews their numbers as much of CT is anything but amazing, ever take a trip to bridgeport or hartford...fun fun

How many of those states have top tier higher education institutions?

Bolded the two I know for sure. Maybe Illinois.

University of Chicago and Northwestern for IL
Johns Hopkins University in MD (also the largest private employer within the state)
And as previously mentioned NJ, NY and CT all have top tier schools.

I won't comment on the 'quality' of your theory.

But I will point out the facts your theory is based upon are wrong.

Connecticut's highest rate is 6.5%; that's hardly considered a high rate.

Maryland's top rate is the same as CT's.

Virgina's top rate is just 5.75%

Mass is just 5.3%

Illinois' top rate is only 3%.

Half the states in your list don't even have what can be considered high tax rates.

I suppose I could list the numerous states with higher taxes and ask that you explain how come they don't have rich people living there etc (under your theory), but I won't.

Fern

Well you also have to take into consideration other taxes. IN NH there's no State Income tax but their property tax is extremely hight. Hell you have to pay an individual tax for every electrical outlet you have. Here in MA they have hight ptoperty taxes, street parking fees, double taxes on Liquor and their taxes for things like Cigarettes are among the highest in the nation

Slight correction-NH property taxes are insanely high. But you make a good point-the income tax rate is only part of the picture. Some states tax everything that does or doesn't move-a favorite here in the northeast is personal property tax (on cars, boats, planes-or if you have a business, damn near everything including the reception area chairs and stationery).

I live in NYC (and have lived in NJ, CA) and I pray for the day that my kids get married so I can move out of this over priced dirty place. People the COL in NYC is insane.

Rent $3000 a month
Parking $300 a month
NYC Income tax
NYC Sales tax
It costs more money to drive out of NY then from NJ to CA

Housing costs are Crazy

Anyone consider that fancy? 579k!!!! 12k a year in taxes!

This is what that buys in Florida

Problem is: There are no jobs in florida and a hurricane can blow your house away. Hurricane insurance is ridiculously expensive, IIRC

lol stupid people. I think I'll build a house right on the beach. Hey where my house at? It was here before that tropical storm hit and... oh. :\

The up side is that the broken window theory states that never-ending problems create a never-ending economy. As soon as construction finishes, the shit gets ripped apart by nature and everybody gets back to work rebuilding it.

Illinois' top rate is only 3%.

Yeh but sales tax is over 8% in most areas and property taxes are retarded. I'll be paying over $11,000 a year for a 1 acre lot and a 3000 sq/ft home that's in the country (I have a well and septic system).

property tax here in houston is 2.523287%
sales tax is 8.25% (cars is 6.25%)
no personal income tax
we've got a revenue tax on business (seriously, revenue? you could lose money and still owe the tax. i guess it keeps companies from "losing" money here and shuffling the profits off to new york or wherever)

In reality the Rich like to live in large cities. Why blame the whole state of Illinois, a fairly large farming state just because of rich slobs that live in Chicago???

They grow a lot of Corn in Illinois.

I visited chicago once and most of the workers I saw were unable to speak english.
