The revival of Voodoo

"NV News with reference to "Maximum PC" magazine announced that the next graphics chip from NVIDIA, which should be announced in the coming autumn would have no "magic" GeForce abbreviation any more. This chip is expected to be based on some totally new architecture and will not be a light modification of the contemporary NVIDIA chips (just as it happened to TNT/TNT 2, GeForce256/GeForce2 GTS and GeForce3/4). "

Can anyone say "Heavy injection of 3DFX tech"? It's the revival of the Voodoo!!

I just hope they dont call it a Voodoo card. It would defile the pure name of the Voodoo..d

nVidia would not use the Voodoo name for their next card, not because they would defile it, but rather, it wouldn't be a smart move in marketing, everyone knows Voodoo = 3DFX | RIVA, TNT, GeForce = nVidia, sure the card will probably be a fusion between nVidia's technology and 3DFX's, but I mean come on, they wouldn't use the Voodoo name.

I voted for #1, because, and me being a former Voodoo owner.. I really don't understand why everyone makes such a big deal over an outdated series of graphics cards.. oh well.

I'd be interested in seeing some of 3dfx's technology (now Nvidia's, heh) in some new cards and games. The games need to get a little more up to date with the newer video cards beforehand, though.. only a handful of games out there need a GF3 to run smoothly, let alone need a GF4 for anything other than future speed and more advanced graphics options (AA, etc.).

Heck, if I were to have a nostalgic video card or whatever, it'd have to be my old STB Velocity 4400 using the Riva TNT chipset. It was the first card I ever saw 3d acceleration with. Quake 2 was quite imressive compared to my old S3 Trio something something card. My next upgrade was to a Voodoo 3 3000, and I was sort of impressed. The only time afterwards something kinda hit me was going from that to my GF2 Pro. My games ran well.. in 32 bit color!!! I witnessed 60+ fps in current games! Woohoo! Now I'm saving up for a Ti4400 or 4600, and I'm not expecting anything that'll knock my socks off, but FS2002 and MoH running smoothly as well as me running UT, Ghost Recon, Quake 3, etc. with AA will be a plus.

Oh well, just my 2 cents. The more speed the better 🙂

Why not? 99% of the people out there are dumb, they just MIGHT remeber that once there was a kick-butt card named the Voodoo. If they saw a Voodoo 6, I'm sure they'd buy it... they wouldn't know if it was a nvidia card or a 3dfx card, and i'm sure they wouldn't have cared either.

I say, why not? Although I'm an ATI user, i say nVidia should milk their acquisition of 3dfx for all its worth... including using the voodoo brand as marketing leverage.

why not use the voodoo name
a name sells

don't think so?
look at all the people rushing out to but the gforce 4 mx lol

and that my friend is what a name will buy you 😉

i mean its a gforce four lol

those of us that have been burnt before or that look into / check stats and ask questions tend to buy the latest / greatest or at least a respectable card capable of meeting "future proof" stats and even thats a gamble lol

but to buy a computer we are weaned on numbers being greater but performance being less in other words :
we buy at first by numbers revisions 1.0 then 1.1 or geforce 2 then gforce 3 then ultra

ati is guilty too radeon 7000 radeon 7500 then radeon 8500 and radeon 8500 le (limited edition anybody?)or better yet radeon ve ddr anybody?

sure we know the le is underclocked but are we the people that they are marketing these cards for?
no this is anandtech and here we learn to ask questions we become more than the average consumer and these cards are for the masses that see these cards as "i can afford that one because it's a gforce four and it must be a great card just not as great as the 400.00 ti4600 but for 225.00 i can live with that

imagine if you could buy a ferrari for 10000.00 would you buy it for the name?but ask yourself how many people you know would and my ranting is done

peace all
