My parents have three cars for two drivers.
My wife and I have three cars for two drivers.
My sister and her husband have three vehicles for two drivers.

The only excuse that we have is that no one in my family buys new cars, and it is cheaper to maintain three cars (one extra in case one breaks down) than to drive two new cars.

Gas doesn't have anything to do with my cost of owning multiple cars. I can't drive them all at once. And I certainly don't have any car payments. In most situations, buying a car on credit is called living beyond your means...

Only having one car is not bloody likely with the wife working in the dead opposite direction, but next $1000 I get I would like to buy a motorscooter for rehearsals and short errands.

Actually, I'd be likely to get a second, more fuel efficient car, and save the land cruiser for when I actually need it. But even at $3-$4/gallon, It's not likely to come out ahead when you consider purchase price, insurance, etc. If I were confident that gas prices were going to stay at this level, I might.
