Bush, GOP Approval Ratings Find New Lows
President Bush's approval ratings hit a series of new lows in an AP-Ipsos poll that also shows Republicans surrendering their advantage on national security ? grim election-year news for a party struggling to stay in power.

Democratic leaders predicted they will seize control of one or both chambers of Congress in November. Republicans said they feared the worst unless the political landscape quickly changes.

Just 36 percent of the public approves of Bush's job performance, his lowest-ever rating in AP-Ipsos polling. By contrast, the president's job approval rating was 47 percent among likely voters just before Election Day 2004 and a whopping 64 percent among registered voters in October 2002.

By comparison, Presidents Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan had public approval in the mid 60s at this stage of their second terms in office, while Dwight Eisenhower was close to 60 percent, according to Gallup polls. Richard Nixon, who was increasingly tangled up in the Watergate scandal, was in the high 20s in early 1974.

As bad as Bush's numbers may be, Congress' are worse.

Just 30 percent of the public approves of the GOP-led Congress' job performance, and Republicans seem to be shouldering the blame.

Only 40 percent of the public approves of Bush's performance on foreign policy and the war on terror, another low-water mark for his presidency. That's down 9 points from a year ago. Just before the 2002 election, 64 percent of registered voters backed Bush on terror and foreign policy.

? Just 35 percent of the public approves of Bush's handling of Iraq, his lowest in AP-Ipsos polling.

"He's in over his head," said Diane Heller, 65, a Pleasant Valley, N.Y., real estate broker and independent voter.

By a 49-33 margin, the public favors Democrats over Republicans when asked which party should control Congress.

That 16-point Democratic advantage is the largest the party has enjoyed in AP-Ipsos polling.

On an issue the GOP has dominated for decades, Republicans are now locked in a tie with Democrats ? 41 percent each ? on the question of which party people trust to protect the country. Democrats made their biggest national security gains among young men, according to the AP-Ipsos poll, which had a 3 percentage point margin of error.

The public gives Democrats a slight edge on what party would best handle Iraq, a reversal from Election Day 2004

And this poll was taken before it was revealed Bush was the leaker and the Congress couldn't agree on immigration reform!

Quite honest when I say whoever votes for this immigration package needs to go, no matter republican or democrat.

I will be watching my reps and if they vote for this, I will automatically vote for the other guy or write in a vote for some avg joe.

Awesome.
See, Democrats are still going to come out and vote for their guy even if he votes fot this bill. But Republicans are gonna stay home and b!tch about how their own party betrayed them.

Hear hear!

But I decided this long before.

The GOP led Congress has proved that is incompetent, and not capable of leading the country in any direction except into ruin.
Since 2000 although they have passed bills that favor themselves, and thier partisan backers, and multi billion dollar corporations,
all this has been at the expense of the citizens of the country, their furtres, and their wellbeing.

The least productive Congress for the good of America in the history of the United States.

Shame on them, their arrogance and sense of self-importance, their catering to petty politics, pandering to the Religious Conservatives,
and lockstep endorsement of biggoted Souther agendas has put 80% of the country on the outside looking in at a country
that has been hijacked by paranoids on a egotistical power trip.

The Republicans eve went so far as to fillibuster their own parties policies on immigration reform, side step the issue as it's too hot to handle
either way with elections on the horizon. It's their 'loose - loose' situation by their own making.

I wont stay home because I value voting and think it is the duty of every American to do it. But I wont vote for whoever votes this thing into law. You want to fall over to a bunch of people who arent even citizens of this country and dismiss the people who put you into office? Have fun in life after politics.

Democrats of course will sell their soul so they regain the house and senate so they can do what America wants, a good old 3 years of hearings on shat 90% of America doesnt care about.

The upcoming elections will be a referendum on the intelligence of the U.S. voters. If the Republicans maintain power after their miserable governance of the past six years then this nation is truly done for.

Oh, and please, before you Republican hacks start calling me a Demcoratic hack, I changed my party affiliation this year. I'm now a registered independent. I'm too embarassed to call myself a Democrat. But it does seem to me that when the current crop of thieves is driving the country off a cliff it's time to give the other crop of thieves the wheel. Maybe they'll turn it enough to keep us from driving off the cliff, even if they don't get us all the way back on the road. Either way, you don't reward the type of "leadership" these bush republicans have given us by voting them into power again. That's just asinine.

America cares about checks and balances. They obviously don't trust Bush's judgement, or he wouldn't be sitting at 36% approval. And Republicans have shown time and again that they aren't willing to do serious checks and balances on the administration.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this evening on the collapse of the Republican budget bill:
?Tonight Republicans pulled their immoral budget from the House floor because they didn?t have the votes. Without the support of a single Democrat, and their party in disarray, Republicans are on the run.

?The Republican budget was red ink as far as the eye could see, and betrayed our national security by slashing funding for crucial initiatives to keep our country safe. Those are the wrong priorities and keep our country headed in the wrong direction.

?The Democratic substitute to the Republican budget was values-based and fiscally responsible, and it addressed the concerns of the American people. Republicans simply couldn?t handle the competition.?

Only the Republicans who always vote Republican are supporting Bush now. All of 'middle America' or the 'swing voters' are not happy.

I think the only way for the ratings to dip lower is for some kind of scandal that can be proven quickly. It is basically the end of the road for the GOP and if the Dems can't take advantage of this situation, they don't deserve to be in power in the first place. Then they will have only themselves to blame if the country is ran further into the ground.

Whats sadder than Republican poll numbers as far as confidence...? Overall poll numbers for Congress. The overall poll numbers for congress are lower than Bush poll numbers.

it had nothing to do with partisanship. your observations are as valid as mine.. to you.

I can't stand either party as a whole. there are #^%Q#'s on both sides.

Look at how desperate they have become:

One elderly Democratic woman was slightly injured when she was assaulted by a DeLay protester. The male DeLay supporter first hit her in the face with a sign and then grabbed her hat and tried to pull it down over her eyes.
Video at that link.

Hey, thats just Republican Social Security reform.
Beat the cr*p out of the elderly.
