the *recommended* sequence for installing new MB, new drivers

I recall reading a post a few weeks ago where a user on this board recommended an *intallation sequence* for installing new MBs. Unfortunately, I can't find it.

Is there actually a definitive sequence? Or are they just recommendations?

i.e. does it matter if you update your bios and chipset drivers AFTER you install your OS and/or other peripheral drivers? I'd like to hear your comments.

And as always...my thanks in advance.

Do you mean a generic sequence for all motherboards, or for a specific motherboard?

If you have an EPoX EP-8K7A for instance you can refer to this LINK for their needed drivers and installation sequence. (Install your operating system first, then use this sequence).

No, I mean just *in general*. While this may sound like a silly question, I thought so as well when I read the post on this topic some weeks ago. But those who responded in that thread were pretty unanimous in claiming that there was - indeed - a bona-fide *recommended* sequence to load all these drivers.

There is no bonafide sequence, just every system builders personal sequence from experaince to avoid the hassle and headaches in the setup. After Win98/Win2K install I install Via 4/1 or Intel chipset Utility and reboot. Now Win2K gets SP2 installed and reboot. Inte ATA 100 drivers get installed on 850 P4 systems otherwise I Avoid them like the plague on BX440 810 815E boards in both Win OS. Now DX 8 And reboot. Now the DX8 vid capture supplement for ATI Radeon video Systems and reboot. Now install nic drivers to establish broadband conncetion and get all the Win updates you will need and reboot when prompted. Vid card drivers reboot, soundcard drivers reboot, Modem reboot. just get all the hardware up and running. After that I get crucial software up and running like software firewalls configured and Nortons configured and tweek the Os settings.

Like said above, everyone does it their own way. My personal method is:
Install PS and all drives into case. (assuming that all case fans are already in)
(outside case) install cpu, HSF, and RAM into MB.
Install MB, and all cards, all at once.
Plug all ribbon cables from drives into board, and tuck/fold/tie all slack.
Plug all power cables into everything, and tuck/fold/tie all slack.

First Boot/ goto BIOS and fiddle with settings.
(RAM timing, FSB, boot order etc.)
SCSI BIOS settings, disable all unused IDs etc.

Boot to Win2k startup disks, and load OS.
Load NIC driver, and go online for all the newest releases.
AMD AGP miniport driver
VIA IDE/PCI driver
Graphics card driver, then all the rest.
Go online to MS and do the updates.
Load Firewall, Antivirus.
Load Burn-in software.
Test for awhile. Then shutdown
Close case, and tidy up the wires behind the desk.

Have beer.
