Because the security manager is a pompus ass:

At a security roundtable discussion in Sydney on Thursday, Ben English, Microsoft's security and management product manager, told attendees that IE undergoes "rigorous code reviews" and is no less secure than any other browser....

He goes on to say that IE has all the features that people want and that Firefox has stuff that people don't need. heheheh- geeze:

In a year, they'll be saying "We're trying to catch up with Firefox- missed the boat there."

Haha, that article is full of suckage. I have just two words for IE: "tabbed browsing... and a pop-up blocker that doesn't suck".

Maybe that was more than two; I dunno.

IE has so many problems because people don't waste time coding spyware and junk on a mere 5-10% of the population... which is also comprised of people who know how to get rid of it faster than it downloads in the first place.

While this is somewhat true, it is largely a myth. The main reason for MS security holes is a fundamentally flawed security model.

The real problem with IE is the shell integration, which was also the big issue in the antitrust case. If it weren't such an integral part of the OS, it would have fewer attack surfaces. This is, indeed, a flawed security model.
