You cannot be on TRL for starters.

So "punk" here is being used to define the overall image of a band, and not their actual music or anything.

I have Bad Religion - New America, The and Bad Religion - Process of Belief, The on my computer, but damned if I'm going to spend two hours looking through them for the best songs....:p

Ugh. Dump The New America. That is, IMO, their worst record.

Some good Bad Religion songs to check out:

Generator
Drunk Sincerity
Anesthesia
Stranger Than Fiction
The Handshake
Hooray for Me
American Jesus
Modern Man
Suffer
Cease

I could list 30 more, but that is a good start. BTW, The Process of Belief is an excellent record. :D

if you kinda like Bad Religion. just go bu "STRANGER THEN FICTION" its their best record. every song on it is amazing

I honestly could not agree more. Stranger Than Fiction is one of my all-time favorite records. Beware of the "punk purists" though, they will tell you it was when BR went south because it was their first major-label release.

sound the same

listen to it more then, i guarantee you they are not the same song repeated 12 times on a cd

My personal favorite right now is the getup kids (I love the Mass pike song!) and brighteyes.

eh getup kids is more emo wouldn't you say? i like that song too.... last niiiight.... by the mass piiike...

anyways, punk has subgenres like "pop punk". this is where all the bands like sum 41 and good charlotte fall. this does not mean they are not punk... because quite frankly, that notion is wrong. and as an aside, funny how nobody talked about good charlotte when they were unknown and went "oh they're not punk"... only after they get famous does this happen. hmm.

anyways yea, favs:

BR, MxPx, Ataris, Blink (their older songs... the ones on Cheshire Cat, and a few from their newer cds), blah blah blah...

i used to listen to way more punk... now i'm more diversified.... ska is in there too :p

oh yea and recipe for hate = fav BR album

seems to me it would be used to define how popular they are. that's kind of silly, imo.

Punk is more of a mindset than an image/sound/etc.

FWIW, punk really shouldn't be lumped into a single genre. Just like all rock music isn't all alike, so goes the same for punk rock. For every heavy metal/alternative/top 40, there is an emo/hardcore/punk-pop, etc.

I think thats a retarded standard.
I would be glad to see a punk band on TRL- as long as they play punk and dont change their style.
Publicity has jack sh!t to do with music. AFI has the GNG video that is kinda popular but I dont think they changed the way they play music to get air play, they were on the track towards that type of music since Black Sails in the SUnset. (I know STS isnt really punk, but it DOES have punk influences that can be heard in a few of the songs).

Also for those of you loooking for a new band, check out Rise Against. Someone on this board pointed me to them during a punk thread and I couldnt be happier w/ them. Their new album kicks ass.

I couldn't agree with you more. Good Charlotte, to me, is an excellent example of a band that is changing who they are and the type of music they play to cater to a more mainstream audience. Take a look at their first album cover (the original, not the crappy re-issue without the band and original drummer's picture) and take a look at them on the cover of the latest Rolling Stone. Quite a contrast in image, if you ask me.

Sum-41, on the other hand, have stayed pretty consistent in who they are and what they play. Just my opinion.

No self-respecting punk would go on that sh*tty show.

for the 9000th time, Sum 41 isn't punk. they're just a rock band... but if you care to be ignorant, call them what you want.

punk, pop, rock, doesn't matter, I have their newest album and the songs sound all the same.

you have "Does This Look Infected?" and all the songs sound the same? maybe you should bring it back to where you purchased it and get another one because your CD is fuct up. or your ears. :p

Who said they had to go on it...they can just shoot a video and have it voted on so finally there would be a reason to watch TRL

The majority of people who watch that show are 15 year old girls. If the time comes that punk is listened to by the majority of 15 year old girls in the country, either it's a sign that the country is completly f*cked up or that punk sucks.

If punk gets voted on then it wont be 15yr old girls doing it. Who says they have to be the only ones that get their say in what goes on the show? I guess there is little hope for that big of a change, but I wasnt emplying that punk would be voted on by the people who are voting now.
I think if a few good punk bands made videos that could be voted on, there might be a swing in the demograph of people calling in.

I would venture to guess that people who like punk a lot aren't so likely to be watching TRL, let alone calling in...

Doesn't that about go for every genre of music?

My biggest gripe with punk music isn't the fact that the bands can't play their instruments or sing, it's the kids in my school that listen to it. All of 'em, they think they're better than everyone else because they're 'different' because they don't wear Abercrombie(or similiar brands).. It's as if they have found some esoteric secret of life and this places them above everyone else.. I hate that punk elitist philosophy.. There.. I'm done ranting. Keep in mind this is only regarding the punk kids in my area.
